One pulsar, PSR 1913+16, proved to be a binary star ; the two stars' enormous interacting gravitational fields provided the first means of detecting gravitational waves, predicted by Albert Einstein in his general theory of relativity . For their discovery of PSR 1913+16, Hulse and Taylor shared a 1993 Nobel Prize. var mm = [["Jan.","January"],["Feb.","February"],["Mar.","March"],["Apr.","April"],["May","May"],["June","June"],["July","July"],["Aug.","August"],["Sept.","September"],["Oct.","October"],["Nov.","November"],["Dec.","December"]]; To cite this page: MLA style: "Hulse, Russell Alan." Ribeiro had finished third in the A Group on Saturday behind Stephen Hill and Oregon native Jeremy Spiering to climb within six of Hildebrand. Sunday was a completely different story, however, as Hildebrand returned to the track with a vengeance. He not only was the top qualifier in the A Group but also led wire-to-wire in the race itself on a soggy day to capture 20 points and go up 16 on Ribeiro, who grabbed 10 for himself with a fourth-place effort. Hill finished second and Bruce Feldman was third.

Este nuevo tipo de púlsar (doble) tiene un gran valor teórico en apoyo de las ondas gravitatorias predichas por la teoría relativista de Einstein, todavía no demostradas experimentalmente por su debilidad en condiciones normales. Extractions: A binary pulsar found in 1974 by the American physicists Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor of Princeton University, a discovery for which they shared the 1993 Nobel prize in physics. It consists of a pulsar (a neutron star) with a pulsation period of 59 milliseconds (equal to 17 pulses per second) and a companion that move around each other in an elongated orbit (period 7.75 hours, periastron 1.1 R sun , apastron 4.8 R sun ). Although the nature of the companion is not known for certain, it is thought to have the same mass as the pulsar (1.4 M sun ) and so is probably also a neutron star . The orbit is gradually shrinking, by about 3.1 mm per orbit, because of gravitational waves as predicted by the general theory of relativity precession

Extractions: last updated 30 August 2004 The binary pulsar PSR B1913+16 (=J1915+1606) was discovered in the summer of 1974 by Russell A. Hulse (Univ. of Massachusetts/Amherst, later Princeton Univ.) and Joseph H. Taylor (Princeton Univ.). Also known as the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar, it comprises two neutron stars closely orbiting their common center of mass. One of these neutron stars is detected as a pulsar. The subsequent study of this binary has provided the strongest evidence to date for the existence of gravitational waves. General relativity predicts that such a system will radiate energy in the form of gravitational waves, causing the stars to slowly spiral towards each other. In 1982 Hulse and Taylor could report, after eight years of observation, that the system was losing energy and inspiralling at the rate predicted by Einstein's general relativity. Data on the PSR B1913+16 system: Right ascension Declination Distance 21,000 light years Mass of detected pulsar 1.441 M
