Allo scoppiare della seconda guerra mondiale, si arruolò come volontario presso la Royal Air Force. Durante il suo servizio nellesercito, scoprì uno spiccato interesse per lelettronica; diventò in breve tempo istruttore dei tecnici radio; fu quindi trasferito al Royal college of science e quindi alla Cranwell radar school. In questo periodo, costruì anche un particolare tipo di oscilloscopio ad ampio schermo. Dopo la guerra, ottenne il diploma del Faraday house electrical engineering college di Londra. Nel 1951 entrò nel gruppo di ricerca della EMI Ltd.; tra il 1958 e il 1959 diresse la realizzazione del primo computer a transistor della Gran Bretagna, detto EMIDEC 1100. In seguito, nel 1967 mise a punto lEMI-scanner, unapparecchiatura per visualizzare sezioni del corpo umano; con questo strumento, inaugurò una nuova tecnica di diagnostica medica, la tomografia computerizzata (TC) . Nel 1972 fu ottenuta la prima tomografia del corpo. Per la scoperta della TC, nel 1979 Hounsfield venne insignito, insieme al fisico sudafricano Allan Mc Leod Cormack, del premio Nobel per la medicina o la fisiologia.

Pedig kétségkívül létfontosságú funkciójú: az állatvilágban segít a zsákmányállat követésében, a megfelelõ táplálék kiválasztásában, a potenciális szexuális partner megtalálásában vagy a fejletlen újszülött emlõsnek anyja megtalálásában. Az ember számára a szaglás szintén döntõ a romlott táplálék illetve egyéb vészhelyzetek (tûz, mérgezés) felismerésében. Az ember mintegy 10 ezer szagféleség megkülönböztetésére képes, ám hogy az egyes szagokat hogyan azonosítjuk, ez a közelmúltig nem volt ismert. Richard Axel és Linda Bruck e téren végzett úttörõmunkát. A két kutató 1991-ben egér kísérletek segítségével együtt fejtette meg szaglásunk bonyolult mûködését. Bár már nem együtt, ám azóta is mindketten a szaglás terén végeznek kutatásokat, gyakran párhuzamosan ugyanarra az eredményre jutva. Az 58 éves Richard Axel a New York-i Columbia Egyetem professzora, míg az 57 éves Linda B.Buck a seattle-i Fred Hutchinson Rákkutató Központ kutatója....''

Extractions: Summary: Initially, imaging of the radiolucent soft tissue of the brain within the bones of the skull seemed to present an insuperable problem, and many indirect techniques were developed, based on detecting displacement of structures within the brain. The introduction of CT, in 1972, made it possible to visualize pathological changes in the soft tissue directly. In many cases, even better results were obtained with MR imaging, while the development of DSA facilitated a whole range of interventional procedures.
