Una fra le caratteristiche essenziali della chimica è l'identità. Ci sono sostanze che si presentano in forme "quasi identiche" ma non "sovrapponibili", le quali sono l'una l'immagine speculare dell'altra, come un guanto destro e uno sinistro, ma che hanno un comportamento chimico spesso molto diverso. Un tragico esempio di questo cattivo uso della chimica è la talidomide: prodotta senza distinguere fra due forme speculari, produsse gravi malformazioni nei figli delle gestanti che la assumevano. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters and professor of chemistry at Cornell University. He shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in chemistry with Kenichi Fukui for his work in predicting the course of chemical reactions. Hoffmann's other honors include the Arthur C. Cope Award of the American Chemical Society, the National Medal of Science, the National Academy of Sciences Award in the Chemical Sciences and the Priestly Medal. He has been awarded numerous honorary degrees, from Columbia and Yale universities, among others. Hoffmann graduated from Columbia in 1958 and earned a Ph.D. in chemical physics from Harvard in 1962. He began teaching at Cornell in 1965. He is the author of three books of poetry, including The Metamict State (1987) and Gaps and Verges (1990), both from the University of Central Florida Press, and co-wrote the play Oxygen with distinguished fellow chemist and Sigma Xi member Carl Djerassi. Considered one of the most important chemists in the past 75 years, a designation bestowed on him by , Hoffmann is also esteemed as a stellar educator. He continues to teach freshman introductory chemistry courses each year and has participated in the production of a television course about chemistry. He has also written popular and scholarly articles on science and other subjects.

Then in 1941 darkness descended, and the annihilation of Polish Jewry began. We went to a ghetto, then a labor camp. My father smuggled my mother and me out of the camp in early 1943, and for the remainder of the war we were hidden by a good Ukrainian in the attic of a school house in a nearby village. My father remained behind in the camp. He organized a breakout attempt which was discovered. Hillel Safran was killed by the Nazis and their helpers in June 1943. Most of the rest of my family suffered a similar fate. My mother and I, and a handful of relatives, survived. We were freed by the Red Army in June 1944. At the end of 1944 we moved to Przemysl and then to Krakow, where I finally went to school. My mother remarried, and Paul Hoffmann was a kind and gentle father to me until his death, two months prior to the Nobel Prize announcement. I learned English, my sixth language at this point, quite quickly. After P.S. 93 and P.S. 16, Brooklyn, I went on to the great Stuyvesant High School, one of New York's selective science schools. Among my classmates were not only future scientists but lawyers, historians, writers - a remarkable group of boys. In the summers I went to Camp Juvenile in the Catskills, a formative experience. Hoffmann immigrated to the United States with his family in 1949. He graduated from Columbia University and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. He collaborated with Robert B. Woodward at Harvard during the next three years and then joined the Cornell University faculty in 1965. Hoffmann undertook the research leading to his share of the prize when he and Woodward sought an explanation of the unexpected course taken by a reaction that Woodward and his colleagues had hoped to use in the synthesis of the complicated molecule of vitamin B . Hoffmann and Woodward discovered that many reactions involving the formation or breaking of rings of atoms take courses that depend on an identifiable symmetry in the mathematical descriptions of the molecular orbitals that undergo the most change. Their theory, expressed in a set of statements now called the Woodward-Hoffmann rules, accounts for the failure of certain cyclic compounds to form from apparently appropriate starting materials, though others are readily produced; it also clarifies the geometric arrangement of the atoms in the products formed when the rings in cyclic compounds are broken.

This town, typical of the Pole of the Settlement, was part of Austria-Hungary when my parents were born. It was Poland in my time and is part of the Soviet Union now. I was named after Roald Amundsen, my first Scandinavian connection. My father was a civil engineer, educated at the Lvov (Lemberg) Polytechnic, my mother by training a school teacher. We went to a ghetto, then a labor camp.
