Loligo forbesi nevû tintahal óriás idegrostjaiba, s így kimutatták, hogy ingerületvezetés alatt az idegrost elektromos potenciálja nagyobb a nyugalomban lévô idegrost potenciáljánál, ellentétben az akkor elfogadott elmélettel, mely szerint ingerületvezetés alatt valamiképpen megszûnik az ideg membránjának ellenállása. Tudták, hogy az idegrost mûködéséhez az szükséges, hogy a rost belsejében nagy káliumion-koncentráció, a környezô oldatban pedig nagy nátriumion-koncentráció álljon fenn. Kísérleti eredményeik (1947) azt mutatták, hogy a nyugalmi szakaszban az ideg membránja csak a kálium belépését engedi meg az ideg belsejébe, izgalmi állapotban viszont a membrán a nátrium számára is átjárhatóvá válik.
