My father, a Baltic German, came from Estonia; my mother was the daughter of a Swabian and a French Swiss. My father's father was a doctor, my mother's father a missionary and Indologist. My father, too, had been a missionary in India for a short while, and my mother had spent several years of her youth in India and had done missionary work there. Peter Camenzind , written in Basle and set in Switzerland, had a quick success. I gave up selling books, married a woman from Basle, the mother of my sons, and moved to the country. At that time a rural life, far from the cities and civilization, was my aim. Since then I have always lived in the country, first, until 1912, in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance, later near Bern, and finally in Montagnola near Lugano, where I am still living. Dopo un anno di lavoro come donna di servizio a Corcelles, dove aveva imparato anche il francese (conosceva altre cinque lingue), la piccola Maria Gundert ritorna in India e fa esperienza, grazie alla confidenza con il missionario Hebich, di un cambiamento radicale avvenuto nella propria esistenza: decide di "dedicarsi, d'ora in avanti, alla realizzazione del regno di Dio sulla terra". A questa scelta è legato anche il matrimonio. Nel 1865 sposa il missionario Charles Isenberg (1840-70), originario di Londra, con il quale lavora presso la missione di Heiderebad. Deve però tornare improvvisamente in Europa, dove Isenberg muore. Da questo matrimonio nascono i due fratellastri di Hermann Hesse: Theodor e Karl Isenberg. Il figlio Hermann porta i nomi di entrambi i nonni. Pur non avendo conosciuto personalmente il nonno paterno (1802-96) cercò tuttavia di risvegliare i legami di sangue con l'Est (l'Estonia apparteneva dal 1721 alla Russia) attraverso un interesse coltivato nel corso della sua esistenza per la politica e la letteratura di quel paese. He is most famous for his novels Steppenwolf Das Glasperlenspiel The Glass Bead Game ), and Siddhartha Hesse's interests in existential spiritual , and mystical themes and Buddhist and Hindu philosophy may be seen in his works. Born on July 2 in Calw WÃ¼rttemberg , Hesse emigrated to Switzerland in and in became a Swiss citizen. A staunch pacifist , Hesse opposed World War I strongly. The residual fallout of his feelings towards war can be seen in many of his books. During World War II his writings found strange allies. The German propagandist Joseph Goebbels initially defended Hesse's books, and as a result he was allowed to continue writing unmolested. However, after he demanded that certain portions in his book Narcissus and Goldmund dealing with pogroms be left untouched, he found himself on the Nazis' blacklist. Despite this ominous situation Hesse escaped World War II unharmed. Like a number of his characters, Hesse had many problems throughout his life with women. His first marriage with Maria Bernoulli, with whom he had three children, ended sadly, his wife having mental problems. His second marriage was apparently a brief fling with Ruth Wenger, lasting only a few months. He finally married Ninon Dolbin in 1931 and remained with her for the rest of his life.
