Gundert (1842 - 1902), der ältesten Tochter des namhaften Indologen und Missionars Herman Gundert. wohnt Hesse mit seinen Eltern in Basel, wo der Vater bei der "Basler Mission" unterrichtet und 1883 die schweizer Staatsangehörigkeit erwirbt (zuvor: russische Staatsangehörigkeit): Rückkehr der Familie nach Calw. Lateinschule in Göppingen zur Vorbereitung auf das Württembergische Landesexamen (Juli 1891), der Voraussetzung für eine kostenlose Ausbildung zum ev. Theologen im "Tübinger Stift". Als staatlicher Schüler muß Hesse auf sein schweizer Bürgerrecht verzichten. Deshalb erwirbt ihm der Vater im November 1890 die württembergische Staatsangehörigkeit (als einzigem Mitglied der Familie). Seminarist im ev. Klosterseminar Maulbronn (ab Sept 1891), aus dem er nach dem 7. Monat flieht.

    Extractions: Bei Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs meldet Hesse sich freiwillig zum Militärdienst für das Deutsche Reich. Er wird jedoch aufgrund seiner hochgradigen Kurzsichtigkeit für "felddienstuntauglich" erklärt. Daraufhin arbeitet er in der Kriegsgefangenenfürsorge. Unter dem Eindruck dieser Tätigkeit spricht er sich öffentlich gegen patriotische Kriegsdichtung aus und wird deshalb von rechtsstehenden Publizisten zum Vaterlandsverräter erklärt. Daraufhin reift bei Hesse der Entschluß heran, sich um die schweizerische Staatsbürgerschaft zu bemühen.

With his appeal for self-realization and his celebration of Eastern mysticism, Hesse posthumously became a cult figure to young people in the English-speaking world. He became a permanent resident of Switzerland in 1919 and a citizen in 1923, settling in Montagnola. A deepening sense of personal crisis led Hesse to psychoanalysis with J.B. He was the sixth son of Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, after whose resignation of the government in 1627 to his son Wilhelm V, Ernst and his brother Hermann respectively founded the collateral lines of Hesse-Rheinfels and Hesse-Rotenburg. He figures prominently in the religious history of his country on account of the controversial literature called forth by his conversion to the Catholic Faith. Under the strict discipline of his mother his instruction in the principles of the Reformed Church received the utmost attention. After considerable travel he chose, in 1641, the military career. In 1642 he entered the Hessian army, proving himself an able commander of the Hessian troops who fought on the side of Sweden during the Thirty Years' War. While visiting the Hessian General Geyso, who was in prison at Gesecke, he was himself arrested and taken prisoner to Paderborn . His social intercourse here with the royal army chaplain laid the foundation of his conversion. After the Peace of Westphalia he took up the government of his portion of Hesse. His desire to establish a collateral line independent of Cassel brought him in 1650 to Vienna, where his conversion to the Catholic Church was effected by the Augustinian Alfons Staimos. Before his formal reception into the church, he returned to Rheinfels and challenged the Hessian theologians, George Calixtus of Helmstadt, Crocius of Marburg, and Haberkorn of Giesses, to a public disputation on certain points of doctrine, with the Capuchin
