Extractions: He worked, for a short time, at the Physical Institute in Vienna, where Professor von Schweidler initiated him in recent discoveries in the field of radioactivity. During 1910-1920 he was Assistant under Stephan Meyer at the Institute of Radium Research of the Viennese Academy of Sciences. In 1919 he received the Lieben Prize for his discovery of the"ultra-radiation" (cosmic radiation), and the year after became Extraordinary Professor of Experimental Physics at the Graz University. From 1921 to 1923, Hess was granted leave of absence, and worked in the United States, where he took a post as Director of the Research Laboratory (created by him) of the U.S. Radium Corporation, at Orange (New Jersey), and as Consulting Physicist for the U.S. Department of the Interior (Bureau of Mines), Washington D.C. In 1923 he returned to Graz University and in 1925 he was appointed Ordinary Professor of Experimental Physics. In 1931 came his appointment as Professor at Innsbruck University and Director of the newly established Institute of Radiology. He founded the station at the Hafelekar mountain (2,300 m) near Innsbruck for observing and studying cosmic rays.

Extractions: Cosmic rays Victor Franz Hess Cosmic rays were first discovered by an Australian physicist Victor Franz Hess (1883-1964) in 1912. Primary cosmic rays are highly energetic atomic nuclei which are thought to originate from stars and supernovas in intergalactic space. The nuclei consist mostly of protons with about 10% -particles and less than 1% being nuclei of atoms heavier than helium. Since nearly all these particles undergo nuclear reactions with atoms in the upper atmosphere, what we observe at ground level are secondary cosmic rays. These are reaction products and consist of a soft component made up of electrons and gamma rays and a `hard' component comprising muons which can penetrate large thicknesses of lead and rock. Cosmic rays sometimes appear in the form of showers in which significant increases in counts are recorded over large areas of the Earth's surface. Cosmic rays have extremely high energies. Some events occurring in air showers indicate that the energy of some rays are in excess of 10 eV(1000 TeV). This is very large compared with the highest energies of 1 TeV currently achievable in today's particle accelerators.
