In 1986 Yuan Tseh Lee received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the understanding of the rates of chemical reactions on a molecular level. He developed instrumentation that set the standard for studies using lasers and focused beams of molecules, which he subsequently used to carry out ground-breaking experiments on simple chemical reactions. This led to a breakthrough in chemists' understanding of the dynamics of chemical processes. Lee shared the prize with Dudley R. Herschbach and John C. Polanyi, who also made significant contributions to this area of basic chemical research. Yuan Lee was born on November 29, 1936 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. His mother was a school teacher and his father an accomplished artist. His elementary education was disrupted by events during World War II. At a young age he was inspired to become a scientist after reading a biography of Marie Curie. Because of his excellent academic record in high school, he was accepted into the National Taiwan University in 1955 without the usual entrance examination. During his first year there he decided to major in chemistry, and he received a bachelor's degree in 1959. Two years later, he earned an M.S. degree at the National Tsinghua University.

There is one other woman in oil on canvas with her on the wallsthe historian Helen Maud Camand considerably more in flesh and blood on the chairs at faculty meetings. The Faculty Room's newcomer, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Cecilia Helena Payne was born in Wendover, England, in 1900. She received the B.A. degree from Newnham College, Cambridge, in 1923 and, believing that opportunity would be greater for a female astronomer in the New World, began work that year as the first graduate student in astronomy at the Harvard Observatory. She earned the Ph.D. in 1925. Her doctoral thesis was judged by a senior astronomer of her time to be the most brilliant ever written in astronomy. "It established definitively that the stars are all essentially of the same composition, despite their differing appearances," says Owen Gingerich, research professor of astronomy and of the history of science. "Moreover, it pointed the way to a conclusion she was reluctant to accept, but that would in later years be seen to be accurate, that the elements hydrogen and helium are fantastically abundant in the stars." In 1934 she married fellow Harvard astronomer Sergei I. Gaposchkin, with whom she made several million observations of thousands of variable stars. She wrote more than 150 papers and nine books. At her death in 1979, Charles Whitney, now professor of astronomy emeritus, praised her particularly as a teacher. She was a superb lecturer, he said, "because she was able to convey the same sense of wonder that she felt to her audience. They were simply swept along by her enthusiasm...." Payne-Gaposchkin, Whitney declared, was "one of the greatest astronomers in history, and the greatest woman astronomer in history."

Herschbach a Stanfordi Egyetemen szerzett fokozatok (B. S., M. S.) után a Harvard Egyetemen doktorált (Ph. D.) kémiai fizikából 1958-ban. 1959-tôl 1963-ig Berkeley-ben tanított a Kaliforniai Egyetemen, 1963-tól pedig a Harvard Egyetemen, 1976-ban lett a természettudomány Baird professzora. A kémiai reakciókban végbemenô változások részleteit akarta megismerni, ezért egy akkoriban az elemi részecskék fizikájában népszeruvé váló módszert alkalmazott, a molekuláris nyaláb szórást. Feltalálta a "keresztezett molekuláris nyaláb technika" néven ismert megoldást, amelynek során gondosan szabályozott körülmények között szuperszonikus sebességgel hozzák össze a molekulák nyalábjait. Ez az eljárás lehetôvé teszi a kémai reakció eseményének részletes, molekulánkénti vizsgálatát. Vissza az Arcképtárba

Extractions: The spectroscopy of molecules doped into superfluid helium nanodroplets provides valuable information on the process of solvation in superfluid helium. In continuation of an earlier report on emission spectra of various phthalocyanines showing a splitting of all molecular transitions in the range of about 5-12 cm-1, the emission spectra of tetracene, pentacene, and perylene in superfluid helium droplets are presented. The new spectra and the results obtained for the phthalocyanines are explained by an empirical model which accounts for the existence of different metastable configurations of a nonsuperfluid solvation lay3r around the guest molecule.
