Unfortunately, the Nobel Prize has been awarded to many minor writers, at the expense of many important writers. A list of the great writers who never received the Nobel Prize, notwithstanding a general recognition of their achievements, includes:

Extractions: 27 februari - 4 september 2005 "[Y]ou are a miracle of decency" (Verner von Heidenstam in a letter to August Strindberg, 7 May 1885) "Like modern animals we have enjoyed socializing with you as society and not as friends, for we do not believe in friends since there are only enemies, and friendship can never be more than a state of cease-fire." (Strindberg in a letter to Heidenstam, 25 June 1886) Being a pugnacious writer Strindberg made many enemies but also many friends. His fierce criticism of Sweden's "Oscarian" rulers and of the prevailing bourgeois values in society gave rise to abhorrence on the one hand and admiration on the other and this continues even in our own time. The Swedish Church, senior civil servants and, not least emancipated women, were recurring targets for his attacks. But his biting polemics could also be aimed at former friends. Carl Larsson, Gustaf af Geijerstam and Verner von Heidenstam are but a few of these. When he was not in the literary limelight but in the circle of his intimate friends, another, and perhaps less Strindbergian side was evident. There are numerous testimonies to him as a faithful and lovable friend.

Extractions: images@exploratorium.edu Nobel Prize Fun Facts Alfred Nobel wrote the final draft of his Nobel Prize bequest at the Swedish Club in Paris on a torn piece of paper in front of four witnesses because he distrusted lawyers. The first great author to be rejected by the Nobel Committee Tolstoy was not even nominated in the first year, and 42 Swedish authors, artists, and critics signed a famous address to object to this. Tolstoy was nominated the next year, and he was found wanting by the reigning conservative committee, because of his "animosity toward culture," "ghastly naturalistic descriptions," and "criticism of the state and the Bible." Another Nobel boo-boo was Antonio Moniz, 1948 winner in medicine and developer of the prefrontal lobotomy for the treatment of schizophrenia. The treatment was abandoned in the 1960s. Robert E. Lucas, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics in 1997 for his work on the theory of "rational expectations," had to split the $1 million prize with his ex-wife. Her divorce lawyer inserted a clause to cover just such a possibility. The clause in the couple's property settlement read: "Wife shall receive 50 percent of any Nobel Prize."

Extractions: This page is an attempt to bring together literary author biographies available on the World Wide Web. The biographies vary in quality, timeliness, length, and authority. If you don't find a biography here and know of one, please send it along. If there is no biography available, write one and send it along. It will take time for this page to become one of substance. And, in keeping with the beauty of the medium, it will continually grow and change. Credit for this page must go to Dr. Gretchen Whitney at The University of Tennessee where I was a graduate student in the School of Information Science . Dr. Whitney's "dead German" assignment gave me inspiration for this page. She also taught me HTML. She may have created a monster. Last revised: August 17, 2002. As a new dimension to this page, I am attempting to locate biographies on Nobel Prize winners in Literature. Those I include will include a notation, (Nobel, year).
