Extractions: Claude Bernard C laude Bernard was born on July 12,1813 to a modest family in Saint-Julien near Villefranche in the Beaujolais, France. His early schooling took place in church schools, which was begun by the village curé , was obtained at the Jesuit college in Villefranche. A t 19, he apprenticed himself to an apothecary in Lyon. While here, his literary ambitions led him to write a comedy, "La rose du Rhone", which was performed on the stage. Encouraged by its reception, he wrote a five-act drama and setting out in 1834 for Paris, submitted it to Saint Marc Girardin, the well-known critic. The latter found evidence of literary ability in the young author's work but advised him to study medicine as a more certain means of securing a livelihood than literature. He followed this counsel, which proved the turning point in his career, and the play "Arthur de Bretagne" was not published until long after his death in 1886. He decided to study medicine and struggled through medical school, just barely meeting the requirements for a medical degree in 1843. Instead of becoming a practicing physician, he became a préparateur , or lecture assistant to the famous physiologist, Dr. Francois Magendie, from whom he learned the rudiments of experimental medicine. He became skilled in the vivisection of

Preparation Of Phenylmagnesium Bromide Discovered by victor grignard, the organometallic is produced exothermically andis seldom isolated from solution because it is highly reactive. http://www.bradley.edu/las/chm/Course/351/Grignardweb2.htm
Extractions: The Grignard Reaction CHM 351; Spring 2004 Introduction The Grignard reagent is prepared by reacting magnesium metal with an alkyl or aryl halide, using an ether as solvent, equation 1. Grignard reagents exist in a rapid equilibrium with dialkyl- or diarylmagnesium and the corresponding magnesium halide, equation 2. The equilibrium constant for phenylmagnesium bromide, in diethyl ether solvent, is approximately 55. Discovered by Victor Grignard, the organometallic is produced exothermically and is seldom isolated from solution because it is highly reactive. Unfortunately, Grignard's reagent readily reacts with several of the components in air (water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide). The following general reactivities are observed for alkyl or aryl halides: CH o o o alkyl The reasons for choosing ethers as solvents for the preparation of a Grignard reagent are numerous. The oxygen atom of the solvent complexes with the electropositive magnesium atom of RMgX, solubilizing the reagent. Diethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran are commonly used because they are relatively inexpensive, easy to dry, and because they are very volatile, easily removed from the product. Also, since simple ethers have high vapor pressures at room temperature, they tend to exclude much of the air from the reaction vessel. In 1912, the versatility of the Grignard reagent in organic synthesis was affirmed when the Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to Grignard. The partial negative charge on the carbon of the Grignard reagent enables the organometallic to react with;
