Links Our main goal is to construct computational models of the human visual system based on its measured abilities (psychophysics) and architecture (neurophysiology and anatomy). These models are intended to give insights into the workings of vision that will lead to predictions of the behavior of the system in the real world in addition to the laboratory experimental situation. Psychophysical experiments usually involve presenting carefully designed patterns on computer monitors to subjects who are asked to report judgments of such things as depth, color, velocity, texture, flow, or just the presence or absence of a signal. In a recent study of stereopsis , subjects judged the relative depth of two adjacent test dots in the center of the screen, a task they can do with great precision and reliability. Next the "scene" was enclosed in a large "picture frame" which spread 50 degrees of visual arc across the stereo display. When the frame was "tilted" by introducing disparities between the two display monitor images, a systematic bias was discovered in the test dot judgments, even though the subjects didn't know that the frame was being manipulated and couldn't report it correctly while they monitored the dots. Thus a powerful subliminal cue was at work. We could find no coordinate transformation or other plausible mathematical explanation for these results, which prove that the classical theory of stereopsis is incorrect.

Extractions: Dr. Schlafer's primary teaching is focused in Foundation Course V in the veterinary curriculum, where he shares teaching responsibilities for endocrinology and reproductive pathology lectures, laboratories and discussion groups. He teaches the Foreign Animal Infections Disease distribution course and participants in Foundation course III laboratories, Equine Theriogenology distribution course, an undergraduate histology course, and in the graduate course, "Current Concepts in Reproductive Biology." During service rotations, he trains residents and senior veterinary students in anatomical pathology. He organizes regular rounds on reproductive pathology and consults widely in this area. He considers working with students one of the most rewarding aspects of life in academia. Papers published since 1995: Gregg, D., C. Mebus and D.H. Extractions: Achieving Consensus on Water Policy in California. Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute of Public Affairs and the Water Education Foundation, California State University, Los Angeles, 1992. As the nation's most populous state, California faces many complex and pressing economic, social and environmental problems. Principal among these is the management of the state's limited water supply and howor ifthat supply can be stretched to meet increasing demands. Not only is California's population expected to swell over the coming decades (with much of this growth occurring in semi-arid central and southern California), but demands for more reliable and higher quality water supplies have come from agricultural, environmental and urban users. Satisfying these competing demands is the challenge that water managers will face into the next century. The history of the amazing water system of California, the problems confronted and solved over the years, the crucial issues we face today, the controversies and emotions behind the facts, and possible solutions for the future, are discussed in this book. 300 pages.
