He studied electrical engineering first in Budapest, later in Berlin, where he finished his academic education with the award of Dr. Ing. in 1927, with his Thesis on the Recording of Transients in Electric Circuits with the Cathode Ray Oscillograph In 1934 Gabor went to the British Thomson-Houston Co. Research Laboratory, Rugby, England, first on an inventor's agreement, later as a member of the research staff, and stayed there for 14 years. This was a fruitful epoch. The low-pressure gas discharge lamp with a positive characteristic, which could be operated on the mains like an incandescent lamp, with which he started his work, was not a success, as it had insufficient life, but he was luckier with other inventions, such as a cathode ray tube with a memory, and finally with holography. Holography was born as an attempt to improve the electron microscope. It was well known since 1936 that the resolving power of electron microscopes had to stop tantalizingly short of resolving atomic lattices, because the aperture of electron objectives could not be increased beyond a certain limit, owing to the spherical aberration which could not be corrected. Gabor considered the possibility of taking first a "bad" picture and correcting it by light-optical means. But in an ordinary electron microgram this is not possible, because one-half (the more important half) of the information has dropped out: the

One can of course introduce almost any amount of mathematics into holography, but the essentials can be explained and understood from physical arguments. Dennis Gabor, Nobel Lecture, 11 th December 1971. In 1948, Dennis Gabor, a Hungarian born British physicist, was working on using physical techniques to improve the electron microscope. He and his assistant Ivor Williams came across the problem of recording wave phase information. They originally intended to record the complete phase and amplitude of an intercepted wave. The wave would be intercepted by a recording medium this meant that all waves scattered or reflected would be recorded. By using a photographic emulsion (light sensitive plate), the intensity differences were recorded which were produced by a background wave that converted the phase differences into intensity changes. The interference between the light reflected and scattered, known as the object beam, and the reference beam is recorded on the said emulsion. Thereafter, the hologram was born. Contact Me

Extractions: In the late 1940s, Dennis Gabor attempted to improve the resolution of the electron microscope using a procedure that he called wavefront reconstruction, but which is now known as holography. Though he was unable to realize his goal at the time, his work was to find much more prolific use years later, after the development of the laser in 1960. Born in Budapest on June 5, 1900, Gabor was eldest of three sons. His mother had once been an actress and his father was a businessman that eventually became the director of the Hungarian General Coal Mines. The young Gabor pursued scientific inquiries at an early stage in his life, carrying out experiments he had read about in scientific periodicals at home in conjunction with one of his brothers. However, he did not immediately have the opportunity of formally pursing his interests, since he was called to serve the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. Following the end of the war in 1918, Gabor embarked on an educational pursuit of mechanical engineering at the Budapest Technical University. Yet, before he could complete his third year, he was once again called to serve his country. This time he chose to leave Hungary rather than fight for a political body he did not support. Moving to Germany, Gabor entered the Berlin Technical University to continue his education. While studying at the academic institution from 1920 to 1927, Gabor had the opportunity to work under such great minds as Albert Einstein and Max Planck, and emerged with a doctorate in engineering. After graduation, Gabor accepted a position as a research engineer for Siemens and Halske, a Berlin firm. Thus, he remained in Germany until Hitlers rise to power, which led him to relocate in 1933 to England, where he began working at the British Thomson-Houston Company.
