As a youngster he was interested in the inner workings of the things around him; at age ten he designed a type of airplane-like carousel, and his parents helped him attain a patent for it. By the time he was a teenager he had a small laboratory in his house where he worked on his own experiments in photography, radiation, and wireless x-rays and developed a passion for physics. He attended the Technische Hochschule in Berlin where he received a bachelor's degree in 1924 and a doctoral degree in 1927 in electrical engineering. There he also had access to the University of Berlin. He visited often to learn more about physics in the presence of greats like Albert Einstein and Max Planck. During the course of his doctoral work he developed a high-speed cathode ray oscillograph, detailed in his thesis Recording of Transients in Electric Circuits with the Cathode Ray Oscillograph. He also created the first iron-protected magnetic electron lens. In 1933 as Adolf Hitler was coming to power in Germany, Gabor left the country returning briefly to Hungary and soon after, settling in England. He was employed by the Thomson-Houston Co. in Rugby where he worked on gas-discharge tubes. Soon he began working with the BTH Research Laboratory. He stayed there until 1948, and it was at BTH that he began the most important work of his career, founding the field of holography.

Feb. 8, 1979, London, Eng.), Hungarian-born electrical engineer who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971 for his invention of holography , a system of lensless, three-dimensional photography that has many applications. A research engineer for the firm of Siemens and Halske in Berlin from 1927, Gabor fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and worked with the Thomson-Houston Company in England, later becoming a British subject. In 1947 he conceived the idea of holography and, by employing conventional filtered-light sources, developed the basic technique. Because conventional light sources generally provided either too little light or light that was too diffuse, holography did not become commercially feasible until the demonstration, in 1960, of the laser, which amplifies the intensity of light waves. In 1949 Gabor joined the faculty of the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, where in 1958 he became professor of applied electron physics. His other work included research on high-speed oscilloscopes, communication theory, physical optics, and television. Gabor was awarded more than 100 patents.

My life-long love of physics started suddenly at the age of 15. I could not wait until I got to the university, I learned the calculus and worked through the textbook of Chwolson, the largest at that time, in the next two years. I remember how fascinated I was by Abbe's theory of the microscope and by Gabriel Lippmann's method of colour photography, which played such a great part in my work, 30 years later. Also, with my late brother George, we built up a little laboratory in our home, where we could repeat most experiments which were modern at that time, such as wireless X-rays and radioactivity. Yet, when I reached university age, I opted for engineering instead of physics. Physics was not yet a profession in Hungary, with a total of half-a-dozen university chairs - and who could have been presumptious enough to aspire to one of these?
