SCIENCE AND TODAY'S VISION OF THE WORLD richard R. ernst Born in Winterthur, Switzerland, on August 14, 1933, studied chemistry at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH), Zurich. http://www.istitutoveneto.it/science/cv_ernst.htm
Extractions: After obtaining his doctorate, Ernst worked in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory of ETH Zurich for a short time, then spent five years in the research department of Varian Associates at Palo Alto, California. Returning to ETH to teach physical Chemistry in 1968, he has held a full professorship there since 1976. He retired in 1998 from his professorship, following the legal requirements. During the past decades, NMR spectroscopy has become one of the most successful instrumental measuring method available to chemistry. It is used, inter alia, to determine the structure of molecules in solution and to gain insights into the interactions between different kinds of molecules (such as enzyme/substrate, soap molecule/water) and the speed of chemical reactions. While proteins had formerly to be crystallised before their structure could be analysed, this can now be done by NMR spectroscopy in their natural environment.

Courant Biography of richard Courant (18881972) Courant had studied at Breslau with two fellow students Otto Toeplitz and ernst Hellinger. http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Courant.html
Extractions: Version for printing Richard Courant 's father was Siegmund Courant and his mother was Martha Freund. It was a Jewish family but there were tensions in it, particularly between Siegmund and his elder brother Jakob. Richard was the eldest of Siegmund and Martha Courant's children and soon after the birth of their second son Siegmund sold his share in the family business in Lublinitz and they bought a business in Glatz. A third son was born in the year they moved to Glatz, Richard being three at the time. When Richard was fourteen years old he began to tutor to make enough money to support himself. Soon after this tragedy struck the family when Jakob, in severe business difficulties, committed suicide. Other members of the family blamed Richard's parents Siegmund and Martha. Shortly after Siegmund was declared bankrupt and the following two years must have been ones of extreme difficulty for Richard, attending school and still supporting himself tutoring. In 1904 Richard's parents left Breslau and moved to Berlin. Richard was earning enough to support himself, even now that he had to rent accommodation in Breslau. Although he had not yet passed the examinations necessary to enter university, Richard left school in 1905 and attended classes in mathematics and physics at the University of Breslau. In 1906 he passed the university entrance examinations and continued to study, now officially a student. Although his original intention was to study physics, Courant found the teaching less satisfactory than that in mathematics. Adolf

Extractions: Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Richard R. Ernst The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1991 Richard Robert Ernst was born in 1933 in Winterthur, Switzerland. His father, Robert Ernst, was teaching as an architect at the technical high school of their city. Richard had the great luck to grow up with two sisters, in a town that combined in a unique qay artistic and industrious activities. At the age of 13, he found in the attic a case filled with chemicals, remainders of an uncle who died in 1923 and was, as a metallurgical engineer, interested in chemistry and photography. Soon, he knew that he would become a chemist, rather than a composer. Thus, after finishing highschool, he started with high expectations and enthusiasm to study chemistry at the famous Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. A book from which he learned a lot at that time was "Theoretical Chemistry" by S. Glasstone. It revealed to him the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, statistical mechanics, and statistical thermodynamics, subjects that were never even mentioned in lectures, except in a voluntary and very excellent lecture course given by the young enthusiastic Professor Hans H. Gunthard who had studied chemistry and physics parallel. He accepted him and associated himwith the most brilliant scientist Hans Primas. He was awarded the Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1991"for his contributions to the development of the methodology of high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy".
