   Joseph erlanger joseph Erlanger was born on January 5, 1874, at San Francisco,California. He is the son of Herman and Sarah Erlanger.

   Extractions: Studying chemistry at the University of California, he received the degree of B.S. of that University and later went to Johns Hopkins University to study medicine, where he obtained his M.D. degree in 1899. After a year of hospital training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, he was appointed assistant in the Department of Physiology at the Medical School there. Until 1906 he stayed there, being successively Instructor, Associate, and Associate Professor. He was then appointed the first Professor of Physiology in the newly established Medical School of the University of Wisconsin, where one of his pupils was H. S. Gasser , who later collaborated with him. In 1910 he was appointed Professor of Physiology in the reorganized Medical School of the Washington University, St. Louis. In 1946 he retired as chairman of this school and is now emeritus professor there. Erlanger's chief research has been done in the fields of electrophysiology and the physiology of the circulatory system. He has studied the principles of sphygmomanometry and devised a recording sphygmomanometer, with which he studied, in man, the influence of pulse pressure on kidney secretion and on orthostatic albuminuria. Later, he devised a clamp with which the auriculo-ventricular bundle of the mammalian heart could be reversibly blocked, and with this device he studied the problems associated with the functions of this bundle.

    Extractions: As president of APS Erlanger traveled to Stockholm to repeat the invitation on behalf of APS to hold the XIII International Physiological Congress in America. He remained president through the congress held in Boston in August 1929. Born in San Francisco, Erlanger attended Berkeley and then went east to earn his medical degree at Johns Hopkins, where he worked during the summers with Lewellys Barker. Shortly after Erlanger received his M.D. degree in 1899, he was offered an assistant professorship at Johns Hopkins under William Henry Howell. He was elected to APS in 1901. American Journal of Physiology Elected to Council in 1910, Erlanger remained on Council, with the exception of two years, until 1929. As treasurer form 1913 to 1923, he helped shape the financial policies of the Society and played an important part in the financial aspects of the transfer of the American Journal of Physiology to the Society. Successivamente si dedica allo studio della conduzione degli impulsi nel cuore: dimostra che la sindrome di Adams-Stokes (bradicardia) è dovuta ad un'alterata conduzione dell'impulso dagli atri ai ventricoli. Dopo la I guerra mondiale, Erlanger riprende le sue ricerche sulla circolazione, in particolare sulle caratteristiche del polso. Insieme con Gasser e con l'aiuto dell'oscilloscopio, riesce a fornire un quadro esatto dei segnali elettrici e degli impulsi nervosi, i quali, misurati in millivolt, appaiono come una serie di punte ("spike") che diminuiscono gradualmente di ampiezza. Erlanger dimostra che questo differente potenziale composto è condizionato dal diverso spessore delle fibre nervose, le più sottili essendo meno eccitabili e meno conduttrici di quelle più robuste. Sulla base di queste osservazioni oscilloscopiche, egli distingue le fibre nervose in A (a,b,g), B e C. Per le loro ricerche sulle attività elettriche del sistema nervoso, Erlanger e Gasser ricevono il premio Nobel 1944 per la fisiologia e la medicina.
