In gemeinsamer Forschungsarbeit entdeckten sie die chemischen Elemente Radium und Polonium und untersuchten radioaktive Strahlung. Sie legten damit eine der Grundlagen für die moderne Kernphysik. Pierre Curie wurde am 15. Mai 1859 in Paris geboren und studierte an der Sorbonne Physik. 1880 beobachtete er gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Jacques, daß ein elektrisches Potential entsteht, wenn man einen Quarzkristall mechanisch deformiert. Die Brüder nannten das Phänomen Piezoelektrizität (siehe piezoelektrischer Effekt). Pierre Curie entdeckte ferner, daß magnetische Substanzen bei bestimmten Temperaturen (dem Curie-Punkt) ihren Magnetismus verlieren. 1895 wurde er Professor an der École de physique et de chimie in Paris. Marie Curie wurde als Marja Sklodowska am 7. November 1867 in Warschau geboren. Ihr Vater war Physiklehrer. Sie ging 1891 nach Paris (wo sie ihren Namen in Marie änderte) und schrieb sich an der Sorbonne ein. Zwei Jahre später bestand sie die Abschlußprüfung für Physik, in der sie den ersten Platz belegte. 1895 heirateten Marie und Pierre Curie. Marie Curie interessierte sich für die jüngsten Entdeckungen von Strahlungen.

     Extractions: Marie Curie 7 de noviembre de 4 de julio de ) fue una pionera en los primeros tiempos del estudio de las radiaciones Nacida en Varsovia Polonia , con el nombre de Maria Skłodowska , se trasladó a París y estudió química y física en la Sorbona , donde se convirtió en la primera mujer en enseñar en sus aulas. En la universidad se unió a otro profesor, Pierre Curie , con quien se casó. Juntos estudiaron los materiales radiactivos, en particular el uranio en forma de pechblenda, que tenía la curiosa propiedad de ser más radiactiva que el Uranio que se extraía de ella. La explicación lógica fue suponer que la pechblenda contenía trazas de algún elemento mucho más radiactivo que el uranio. Tras varios años de trabajo constante, a través de la concentración de varias clases de pechblenda, aislaron dos nuevos elementos químicos . El primero fue nombrado como polonio en referencia a su país nativo, y el otro, radio debido a su intensa radiactividad. Junto a Pierre Curie y Henri Becquerel fue galardonada con el Premio Nobel de Física , en "en reconocimiento de los extraordinarios servicios rendidos en sus investigaciones conjuntas sobre los fenómenos de radiación descubierta por Henri Becquerel". Fue la primera mujer que obtuvo tal galardón.
