Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (1845-1923) On November 8, 1895, at the University of Wurzburg, Wilhelm Roentgen's attention was drawn to a glowing fluorescent screen on a nearby table. Roentgen immediately determined that the fluorescence was caused by invisible rays originating from the partially evacuated glass Hittorf-Crookes tube he was using to study cathode rays (i.e., electrons). Surprisingly, these mysterious rays penetrated the opaque black paper wrapped around the tube. Roentgen had discovered X rays, a momentous event that instantly revolutionized the field of physics and medicine. However, prior to his first formal correspondence to the University Physical-Medical Society, Roentgen spent two months thoroughly investigating the properties of X rays. Silvanus Thompson complained that Roentgen left "little for others to do beyond elaborating his work." For his discovery, Roentgen received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901. When later asked what his thoughts were at the moment of his discovery, he replied "I didn't think, I investigated. "It was the crowning achievement in a career beset by more than its share of difficulties.

Working with her husband, Pierre , she showed thorium, as well as uranium to be radioactive, and demonstrated that the radioactivity of a substance was proportional to the quantity of radioactive material present. Noticing that the radioactivity in some samples was too high to explain by any concentration of uranium, she set out to isolate the source of the radioactivity. In 1898, she discovered polonium in pitchblende. The radioactivity was not strong enough to explain the observations, however, so further investigations were carried out. Later that year, Marie discovered a trace amount of highly radioactive radium. During the course of four years, the Curies refined eight tons of raw ore to produce one gram of radium. Marie shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics with her husband Pierre and Henri Becquerel for the investigation of radioactivity. She also received the 1911 Nobel Prize in chemistry for her discovery of two new elements, which she had to accept alone because her husband had been killed in a traffic accident. This makes Madame Curie one of only four people to have received two Nobel Prizes:

Together with her husband, Pierre, she discovered two new elements (radium and polonium, two radioactive elements that they extracted chemically from pitchblende ore) and studied the x-rays they emitted. She found that the harmful properties of x-rays were able to kill tumors. By the end of World War I, Marie Curie was probably the most famous woman in the world. She had made a conscious decision, however, not to patent methods of processing radium or its medical applications. Marie Curie was born November 7, 1867 in Poland and died on July 4, 1934. Her co-discovery with her husband Pierre Curie of the radioactive elements radium and polonium represents one of the best known stories in modern science for which they were recognized in 1901 with the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1911, Marie Curie was honored with a second Nobel prize, this time in chemistry, to honor her for successfully isolating pure radium and determining radium's atomic weight.

When she finished her secondary education, she went to Paris and became a governess to help pay for her sister's medical studies there. In 1891, Curie began her studies at the Sorbonne and joined Dr. Gabriel Lippmann's laboratory two years later. In 1895 she married Pierre Curie, with whom she worked until his untimely death in 1906. Marie Curie was awarded a Ph.D. in 1903 for her work on the discovery and isolation of two elements, polonium and radium. That same year, Marie, her husband Pierre, and Henri Becquerel shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of radioactivity. Marie was the first to use the terms "radioactive" and "radioactivity" to describe the elements exhibiting this property of matter, as well as the property itself. In 1904 she became the chief research assistant in Pierre Curie's laboratory at the Sorbonne. In 1906, after Pierre's passing, she was appointed to Pierre's vacant professorship and became the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne. The Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to her five years later for the isolation of pure radium.
