Interviews were conducted in Lindau, Germany, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere in the United States. The video documentation subsequently formed the core of the Nobel Voices Video History Project and the exhibition Nobel Voices: Celebrating 100 Years of the Nobel Prize . The interviewees were asked about their motivations, visions for the future, and opinions on the nature of creativity and innovation. In the interviews, the laureates speak about their passion for their work, their childhood inspirations, the spirit of discovery, and the personal meaning of the Nobel Prize.

Extractions: Claude Cohen-Tannoudji is a Professor at the College de France in Paris, and he does his research at the Laboratory of Physics of the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. He was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics jointly with Prof. Steven Chu and Dr. William D. Phillips for the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. Born in Constantine, he made his high school studies in Algiers which was then a French city. He left for Paris in 1953 to attend the Ecole Normale Superieure. In his first year he studied mathematics but then changed to physics fascinated by the lectures of one of his teachers, Prof. Alfred Kastler. He continued his studies until 1962 when he earned his Ph.D. degree in physics and accepted a teaching post at the University of Paris. In 1973 he was appointed Professor of Atomic and Molecular Physics at the College de France. There he developed new methods of laser cooling and trapping atoms in laser light. These methods have contributed greatly to increasing our knowledge of the interplay between radiation and matter. They have allowed scientists to study atoms and molecules in gases at a much more detailed level and have opened the way to a deeper understanding of the quantum-physical behaviour of gases. This may lead to applications such as more precise atomic clocks and atom lasers, which may be used in e.g. space navigation and in the developing field of quantum information.

The 1996 CNRS Gold Medal The physicist claude cohentannoudji was awarded the 1996 CNRS Gold Medal for his claude cohen-tannoudji is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, http://www.cnrs.fr/cw/en/nomi/prix/or96.html
Extractions: Claude Cohen-Tannoudji is awarded the 1996 CNRS Gold Medal Every year since 1954, the CNRS has awarded its highest distinction, the Gold Medal, to outstanding members of the French scientific community whose work has contributed in an exceptional manner to the development and influence of French research. The medal is a crowning reward to scientists whose work and career have earned them international acclaim. The physicist Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was awarded the 1996 CNRS Gold Medal for his work on quantum optics and the interactions between atoms and electromagnetic waves. Understanding these interactions is of crucial importance to basic physics and technology. His work and that of his collaborators has led to the discovery of a new field of nuclear physics and opened new prospects for scientific research in terms both of theoretical knowledge and practical applications. In a context of intense international competition, his research and teaching have greatly contributed to the development of French nuclear physics, thanks to which, in this field of science, France now plays a pioneering role in the world. Claude Cohen-Tannoudji is a member of the French Academy of Sciences , a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and a former student of Alfred Kastler (Nobel Prize in physics) and Jean Brossel, who supervised his doctoral dissertation. His entire scientific career was spent at the
