Extractions: Biographical Memoirs of Deceased Fellows Originally prepared for publication as part of Bright Sparcs by the Australian Science Archives Project By Frank Fenner With the death of Frank Macfarlane Burnet on 31 August 1985, Australia lost its greatest biologist, a man who had spent virtually all of a long working life in Australia. His experimental work on bacteriophages and animal viruses, especially influenza virus, resulted in major discoveries concerning their nature and replication, and he was a pioneer in the application of ecological principles to viral diseases. He proposed two concepts in immunology-acquired immunological tolerance and the clonal selection theory of antibody production-which proved to be of critical importance in stimulating research and led to a more complete understanding of immune processes. In the later stages of his life he lectured and wrote extensively about problems of human biology and human affairs, ageing and cancer. He was a Foundation Fellow and, from 1965 to 1969, President of the Australian Academy of Science. Macfarlane Burnet, who from childhood and through out his life was known as 'Mac' to his close friends, was the second of seven children. At the time of his birth, his father was manager of the Traralgon branch of the Colonial Bank. In 1909, he was transferred and moved with the family to Terang, in western Victoria. In both places young Burnet went to the local primary school. As related in his autobiography, Burnet retained vivid memories of his life as a boy in Terang, where he returned for vacations until he was in his twenties. He was a shy boy, but revelled in the opportunities to wander in the nearby countryside, especially near Lake Terang, where he was greatly interested in the variety of wild life to be seen. He became a member of the Boy Scouts in 1910, soon after the movement was founded in Victoria, and enjoyed the associated camping and outdoor activities.

Extractions: Early Life Macfarlane Burnet was born in Traralgon, Victoria on 3 September 1899. As a young boy, his science career started with a keen interest in beetles and the bush around his home. After attending Geelong College , Burnet studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and graduated in 1922. In 1924 he began a long association with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. Burnet became Director of the WEHI in 1943, and held this position until his retirement in 1965. Burnet's scientific expertise lay in the areas of virology and immunology. He perfected techniques for growing animal viruses in the laboratory, and used these to study poliomyelitis, influenza, herpes simplex, psittacosis, Q fever and other diseases. The quality of Burnet's work on viruses was so outstanding that he was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize for this work.

On Sept. 3, 1899, F. Macfarlane Burnet was born in the country town of Traralgon. He was a naturalist at heart, wandering in the bush to study animals, birds, and insects. After graduating as a doctor of medicine from Melbourne University in 1922, he studied staphylococcal infections at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne. He worked at the institute for 41 years, becoming director in 1942. In 1930 Burnet discovered the existence of multiple strains of the poliomyelitis virus, essential knowledge for the production of vaccine. While visiting Sir Henry Dale in London in 1931, he observed the discovery of the influenza virus and mastered the developing-chick-embryo technique for virus culture. Returning to Australia in 1932, Burnet and his colleagues were the first to make influenza virus vaccine by the egg technique. In 1936 they discovered that Q fever, an infection in slaughter house workers, which had a worldwide distribution in humans, cattle, and sheep, was caused by a rickettsial organism. They also discovered, in 1952, the virus that causes the brain disease Murray Valley encephalitis, finding that it was carried by migrating birds from New Guinea and transmitted by mosquitoes to man.

About Us The early history of the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health (Burnet Institute) is closely linked to The Fairfield Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Melbourne. Formerly known as The Queen's Memorial Infectious Disease Hospital, Fairfield Hospital was founded at the turn of the century when epidemics of infectious diseases such as diphtheria, scarlet fever and polio were rampant. At the initiative of Dr John Forbes, then the medical superintendent of Fairfield Hospital, a virology laboratory was established at Fairfield Hospital in 1950 to undertake clinical, diagnostic and research services for the many patients with viral infections. This initiative was enthusiastically supported by Professor Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet, then Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Medical Research Institute and Honorary Consultant Epidemiologist at Fairfield from 1947 until his death in August 1985. Initial funding for the laboratory was provided by a private donor, John Doble, who was a personal friend of Dr Forbes. Dr Alan Ferris was the first Director of the Virology Laboratory, and he served until his retirement in 1970, at which time Prof Ian Gust was appointed Director, continuing the tradition of research, teaching and patient care which had been established by his predecessor.
