Bertram N. Brockhouse - Autobiography bertram N. brockhouse It appears that I was born in hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta, From Les Prix nobel. The nobel Prizes 1994, Editor Tore Frängsmyr, http://nobelprize.org/physics/laureates/1994/brockhouse-autobio.html
Extractions: HOME SITE HELP ABOUT SEARCH ... EDUCATIONAL It appears that I was born in hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada on July 15, 1918. My first memories are of a farm near Milk River where I lived with my mother and father and my sister, Alice Evelyn, and a variety of farm and domestic animals. My father, Israel Bertram Brockhouse, had homesteaded with other members of his family in 1910. He had spent his years to that time in the United States after being brought to this continent at two years of age from the family's native Yorkshire. My mother, Mable Emily (Neville) Brockhouse had grown up in Illinois, the product of uncounted generations of North American English people. As the years went on there were two other children born: Robert Paul, who died in infancy, and Gordon Edgar who became much later a railroad civil engineer. In the winter of 1926-27 our family moved to Vancouver B.C. and it was in that city my sister and brother and I grew up. My sister entered the school system in a normal way. But I had been a somewhat nominal attendee of the one-room elementary school a couple of miles from our farm and my preparation for the system was somewhat mixed. I must have learned to read and to do simple arithmetic at a very early age because I cannot remember ever learning these subjects. But in other ways I was much behind my potential classmates. But the fine Vancouver schools I attended (Central and then Lord Roberts elementary schools and King George High School - and the Sunday School of St. John's United Church) soon took care of this. So I had what I believe to be a good basic education, except for social and organizational defects probably arising from the facts that I found school work easy and that I was younger than most of my classmates.

Extractions: in full BERTRAM NEVILLE BROCKHOUSE (b. July 15, 1918, Lethbridge, Alta., Canada), Canadian physicist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1994 with American physicist Clifford G. Shull for their separate but concurrent development of neutron-scattering techniques. In such techniques, a beam of neutrons is aimed at a target material, and the resultant scattering of the neutrons yields information about that material's atomic structure. Brockhouse developed a variant technique known as inelastic neutron scattering, in which the relative energies of the scattered neutrons are measured to yield additional data. Brockhouse was educated at the University of British Columbia (B.A., 1947) and at the University of Toronto (M.A., 1948; Ph.D., 1950). He conducted his award-winning work from 1950 to 1962 at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratory, a facility operated by Atomic Energy of Canada. Brockhouse used inelastic neutron scattering in his pioneering examination of phonons, which are units of the lattice vibrational energy expended by the scattered neutrons. He also developed the neutron spectrometer and was one of the first to measure the phonon dispersion curve of a solid. Brockhouse was a professor at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ont.) from 1962 until his retirement in 1984.

Extractions: Two thirds of the British population do not trust the organisations involved in the transportation of radioactive waste. Almost 100 per cent think that the management of radioactive waste is an important issue for society and over 75 per cent are concerned about the direct personal impact of the issue on them and their family (1). So, why are the public so ill informed about many of the issues surrounding the transport of radioactive materials and why is there such concern when there are strict safety regulations in the UK? How does this affect decisions made about future movements of spent nuclear fuel and decommissioning waste? The answers to these questions are now becoming clearer but they are not going to solve the nuclear industry's image problems, or bring overnight acceptance of nuclear waste transport. In a talk presented at the Society for Radiological Protection's 'Transport Issues' meeting today (Thursday 16 October 2003) David Collier, Director of Faulkland Associates, an Oxford-based consultancy specialising in stakeholder engagement programmes and pressure group issues, said that trust remains the key. Research typically shows that, at best, a third of the British population trust the organisations involved in radioactive waste transport to be reliable and honest, although almost everybody questioned has faith in academic scientists.
