Prominent among them were Einstein and quantum pioneer Max Born THE DEVELOPMENT of the hydrogen bomb was swift. In November 1952 in the South Pacific's Eniwetok Atoll, the US discharged a prototype thermonuclear device that was hundreds of times more powerful than the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Then 10 months later, the Soviets exploded a bomb that was as powerful and more sophisticated than the US bomb. Subsequently, on 1 March 1954, the Americans detonated a hydrogen bomb more than double the power of their first one. When the dust cleared, a crater 2000m in diameter replaced two South Pacific islands and part of a third. US President Dwight Eisenhower would soon observe, "Humanity has now achieved, for the first time in its history, the power to end its history." He was a pacifist and loved science for its beauty. He educated the developers of the atom bomb. And there's a significant Australian connection. Biographer Nancy Greenspan tells the tale. Robyn Williams: Well I think you’ll be aware that this is the International Year of Physics and that it was so dubbed to celebrate Einstein’s astonishing contributions in 1905. To assist these celebrations there have been parties all over the world where you can see Einsteins. These are usually men dressed up in white wigs, usually fright wigs plus droopy moustaches and if you’re lucky as I was you’ll also be able to see an Einstein looking like the young hunk he was in 1905, only 26 years old instead of just the standard image of the cuddly old boffin from central casting. Lise Meitner of course died long ago and she was another of those dressed up persons. So did Max Born about whom Nancy Greenspan has just produced a fine biography. Born was Einstein’s musical partner. He also helped reveal the quantum nature of the universe, one of the century’s scientific giants in other words. And he has a remarkable Australian connection.
