He was awarded the Prize of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Göttingen for his work on the stability of elastic wires and tapes in 1906, and graduated at this university a year later on the basis of this work.

Extractions: Max Born was born into a Jewish family in Breslau, Germany , on 11th December, 1882. He studied physics at the University of Gottingen and obtained his doctorate in 1907. Born became professor of physics at Frankfurt-am-Main (1919-21) before moving back to the University of Gottingen where he made it into the centre for theoretical physics. Inspired by the work of Nils Bohr , Born attempted to seek a mathematical explanation for the quantum theory. In 1924 Born coined the term quantum mechanics and the following year worked with his student, Werner Heisenberg , to develop a system called matrix mechanics that accounted mathematically for the position and momentum of the electron in the atom. Born was an opponent of Adolf Hitler and he left Germany when he came to power in 1933. He went to England where he became a lecturer at the

Extractions: Version for printing Max Born was born into a Jewish family. His father, Gustav Born, was a distinguished medical professor of embryology at the University of Breslau. Max's mother, Margarete Kaufmann, came from a Breslau family who were in the textile industry. It was from his mother that Max inherited his love of music, but sadly she died when he was four years old. Gustav then appointed governesses to look after Max and his younger sister over the next four years until 1890 when he married again. The family provided a cultured and academic background for Max as he grew up but, although Max's new mother looked after the family well, neither Max nor his sister formed a particularly loving relationship with her. Gymnasium in Breslau, studying a wide range of subjects such as mathematics, physics, history, modern languages, Latin, Greek, and German. He showed little promise at school and in particular he showed more interest in the humanities than in the sciences. Entering the University of Breslau in 1901 he took a wide range of science subjects, mainly to go along with his father's wishes (his father had died shortly before Max left school). The list of courses he took in session 1901-02 was certainly impressive, including mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, logic, philosophy, and zoology.

Extractions: tunic fragment, Peru; 16-19107 Max Uhle is considered the father of archaeology in South America because of the unparalleled amount of time and research that he has devoted to the development of South American archaeology. The majority of his contributions to the study of Western South America are the amount of artifacts that he amassed during his three decades of digging in the area. Since then many of his finds and theories have been used to increase the knowledge of chronology, culture, and people of Western South America during the preceding two millenniums. After losing his funding from Germany he went to the University of Pennsylvania where he met Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, a wealthy woman who had a love for Uhles work. She helped to fund Uhle during the next decade and was one of the reasons that allowed him to continue excavating on a grand scale. He spent nearly two years in the United States until 1899 when he returned to Peru to continue his work. During the following years he collected approximately 9,200 artifacts spanning 3,000 years of Peruvian pre-history ( Mankato State University After 1905 he spent most of his time in South America helping to create museums and making lectures at universities. He also continued to excavate sights, but he did not continue at the old pace, which he had become known for during the preceding decades. Despite this he made many more discoveries of artifacts and sights in South America.

In 1837, although still a Protestant , he sided with the imprisoned Archbishop of Cologne (see DROSTE-VISCHERING), and thus lost the favour of the Prussian Government. In 1840 he was appointed ministerial successor with the title of Legationsrat In 1850 Von Gagern was again in the service of the State of Nassau, being employed as an upper ministerial clerk. He had, however, lost the confidence of the duke by his "Little Germany" policy, and influential circles looked upon the Catholic Church unfavourably. In 1854, after having been conspicuously slighted, he retired from the state service. His efforts to obtain a historical professorship at Bonn failed owing to the dislike of Protestants for converts to Catholicism. During the years 1855-73 he was in the service of Austria, first as head clerk in a ministerial department, then as departmental head in the mercantile political division of the ministry of foreign affairs. From 1860 he had also charge of the department of the press for foreign affairs, a position which gave him a deep insight into Austrian policy without, however, leading to an independent position. In 1881, eight years after his retirement on a pension, Emperor Francis Joseph made him a life member of the upper house of the imperial Austrian Parliament. His rich intellectual gifts, his honourable character, unselfish nature, and kindliness were recognized even by his political opponents. He wa in addition genuinely religious, and loyally supported Catholic interests whenever possible.
