Chemical & Engineering News: Top Pharmaceuticals: Tagamet The project that led to the discovery of H2receptor antagonists and cimetidinewas initiated by sir james W. black when he joined SmithKline French at http://pubs.acs.org/cen/coverstory/83/8325/8325tagamet.html
Extractions: [ Skip Navigation ] The development of tagamet revolutionized the treatment of duodenal and gastric (stomach) ulcers and other disorders, such as heartburn associated with acid reflux, that require a reduction in the amount of gastric acid secreted in the stomach. Before the introduction of the drug, treatment of peptic ulcersthe collective name for gastric and duodenal ulcersrelied on extensive bed rest, imposition of a bland diet, treatment with antacids and/or anticholinergics, and often involved surgery if the ulcer recurred. Tagamet was the first clinically effective histamine H -receptor antagonist. Histamine is an agonist found throughout body tissue that plays a key role in the regulation of various physiological processes. It acts at special sites in the body known as histamine receptors, of which there are four subtypes: H , H , H , and H . In the stomach, histamine stimulates gastric acid production by interacting with the H

ONLINE SERVICES SEARCH You are here: Home: About Glasgow: Lord Provost's message: Provosts of Glasgow The Medieval burgh of Glasgow was administered on behalf of the bishops of Glasgow by two, or sometimes three officials, usually known as âbailiesâ, sometimes as âprovostsâ. The creation of the office of provost in the modern sense of a single chief magistrate was not until the early 1450s (certainly by December 1453, probably not before August 1450). Thereafter the sequence of office holders is incomplete until the beginning of the council records in 1574 and occasionally even thereafter. Until 1833 the provost and other officials were normally chosen in late September or October, after that date the election was in November. Thus the reference to 1800, below, means the official year beginning in October 1800.

The fruit, which is inedible, resembles a banana, and is clearly chosen for this purpose on account of its shape. The ceremony should be performed three days before or after the new moon. In the county of Bekes, in Hungary, barren women are fertilised by being struck with a stick which has first been used to separate pairing dogs. Here a fertilising virtue is clearly supposed to be inherent in the stick and to be conveyed by contact to the women.
