Until his tenth year he attended the primary school in his native place; after this he was a pupil in the gymnasium at Munich. In 1770 he entered the Society of Jesus at Landsberg in Upper Bavaria as a novice; upon the suppression of the Society Protestants , and was universally revered by his pupils, among whom was the Crown Prince Louis, later King of Bavaria. In 1818 Sailer declined the offer of the Prussian Government to have him appointed Archbishop of Cologne; in 1819 the Bavarian Government, through the influence of the Crown Prince Louis, nominated him as Bishop of Augsburg, but the nomination was rejected by Rome. In 1821, however, after he had sufficiently justified himself, he was appointed cathedral canon of Ratisbon, in 1822 auxiliary bishop and coadjutor with right of succession, in 1825 cathedral provost, and in 1829 Bishop of Ratisbon. The age in which Sailer lived was dominated by the "Enlightenment", which in its radical form disputed the fundamental dogmas of

On 21 Dec., 1782, he was ordained priest and after doing parish work at Kenmath, Kaltenbrunn, and Miesbrunn he became professor and subregens at the diocesan seminary of Ratisbon in 1788 and regens in 1802. From 1804 he was also pastor of the cathedral. In 1829 he was appointed auxiliary Bishop of Ratisbon and consecrated titular Bishop of Comana. However, he knew little of science and was captivated by history, an interest he continues to cultivate. While in high school, Bishop's curiosity about medicine and science were stimulated by the family physician. He entered Gettysburg College and majored in chemistry, with the hope of entering medical school. Bishop was engrossed by many subjects and imagined himself a historian, a philosopher, or a novelist. But never, he insists, a scientist. Bishop entered Harvard Medical School in 1957 with little interest in practicing medicine, hoping instead to become a professor. At Harvard, he discovered that the road to an academic career in the biomedical sciences was paved with research, something that he was not well prepared to pursue. Nonetheless, Bishop developed an increasing fascination with research, thanks to classmates John Menninger and Howard Berg. When he tried to find summer work in a neurobiology laboratory, however, he was turned down for lack of experience. Uncertain about his future in medicine, Bishop accepted an offer for a year of independent study with Edgar Taft in the Department of Pathology, chaired by Benjamin Castleman. During this time, he read a great deal on what was becoming a new passion for Bishop, molecular biology.

Extractions: A family physician spawned Bishop's interest in medicine. During his first two years of medical school, Bishop realized that his scientific interests were in research. He was fortunate to have a mentor, Leon Levintow, who recognized his talents and offered him a faculty position at the University of California at San Francisco. Bishop forged a scientific partnership with Harold Varmus, a colleague at U.C.S.F., and together they identified a large family of genes that has been implicated in the genesis of cancer. Their research has had significant influence on contemporary knowledge about tumor development and the systems that govern cell growth. Bishop is a professor in the departments of microbiology and immunology and biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California at San Francisco. Born in York, Pennsylvania, population 400, the son of a Lutheran minister, Bishop spent his youth hammering out hymns on the organ in his father's church. A psychological test conducted at his high school suggested that perhaps he would be a good music teacher or forest ranger. "No mention of science," Bishop recalled. The future Nobel Laureate in Biology went off to study liberal arts at Gettysburg College, earning a pre-med minor. His scientific brilliance soon began to assert itself, and he was admitted to Harvard University to study medicine. For the young man from the Pennsylvania countryside, Boston was paradise: theaters and museums and a symphony! Not to mention the wealth of universities, overflowing with the best and the brightest students from all over the world. His research earned him accolades, but the lesson of his childhood expectations kept him wide-eyed at his own success. Even as a professor of biology at the University of California San Francisco, he would never have guessed that when young Harold Varmus walked into his laboratory and asked to work with him, that the mentorship would turn into a research partnership and eventually earn both of them the highest recognition accorded to scientists.

When he was growing up he was torn between which one to pursue. By participating in both, he came to realize that his talents were more suited for a career in science. But he didn't give up his music. During his college years, Dr. Bishop considered several careers including journalism, teaching music and forestry. Even when he entered Harvard Medical School, Dr. Bishop was uncertain about wanting to practice medicine. But with the help and influence of teachers and friends, he realized that research was the path he wanted to take. He made that decision at the age of 30. Dr. Bishop became intrigued by microbiology by reading about it on his own. He was eventually steered to the study of how cells become cancerous. Dr. Bishop and Dr. Varmus discovered that genes can switch normal cells into cancer when viruses invade those genes. Because of this discovery, much progress has been made in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer.

John Ellis, Rector of Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, a descendant of the Ellis family of Kiddall Hall, Yorkshire, and Susannah Welbore. Of six brothers, John, the eldest, became Under-Secretary of State to William III; William, a Jacobite Protestant , was Secretary of State of James II in exile; Philip became a Benedictine monk and Catholic bishop; Welbore became Protestant bishop of Kildare and afterwards of Meath, Ireland; Samuel was Marshal of King's Bench; and Charles an Anglican clergyman. Philip, while still a Westminster schoolboy, was converted to the Catholic Faith, and when eighteen years old went to St. Gregory's, Douai , where he was professed, taking the name of Michael in religion (30 Nov., 1670). After ordination he returned in 1685 to the English mission where he became one of the royal chaplains. In 1688 he was appointed vicar Apostolic of the newly created Western District and was consecrated by Mgr. d'Adda, the papal nuncio (6 May). At the revolution in 1688 he was imprisoned, but being soon liberated he retired to Saint-Germain and afterwards to Rome. In 1696 he was named assistant prelate at the pontifical throne; and in Rome his knowledge of English affairs made him so useful that his repeated petitions for leave to return to his vicariate were refused. In 1704 he resigned the vicariate, and in 1708 was made Bishop of Segni, being enthroned on 28 Oct. His first care was to rebuild the ruined monastery of S. Chiara and open it as a diocesan seminary. This he enriched with many gifts and a large legacy. A curios survival of his English title survives in an inscription at Segni to "Ph. M. Mylord Ellis". Eleven sermons preached in 1685 and 1686 before James II, Queen Mary of Modena, and Queen Henrietta Maria, were published in pamphlet form, some of which have been reprinted (London, 1741; 1772). The Acts of his synod at Segni in 1710 were also published by order of
