In 1903 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Pierre and Marie Curie. He was a member of a scientific family extending through several generations, the most notable being his grandfather Antoine-Cesar Becquerel (1788-1878), his father, Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel (1820-91), and his son Jean Becquerel (1878-1953). By 1896 Henri was an accomplished and respected physicista member of the Academie des Sciences since 1889but more important than his research thus far were his expertise with phosphorescent materials, his familiarity with uranium compounds, and his general skill in laboratory techniques, including photography. Together, these were to place the discovery of radioactivity within his reach.

Extractions: Antoine Henri Becquerel Impossível esconder o desapontamento.

Extractions: resources Students' resources Antoine-Henri Becquerel was the first person to observe the natural radioactivity of uranium and to propose the presence of previously unknown rays. Becquerel's theory was that X-rays might be produced by fluorescent material (this means that it absorbs ultraviolet light and emits it again as visible light). He was working with a uranium compound which fluoresces when it is exposed to sunlight - but as luck would have it the sun did not shine for several days. Becquerel left his uranium sample and a photographic plate in a drawer. Eventually, when the cloudy weather showed no signs of lifting, he decided to develop the plate anyway. The plate was heavily fogged - radiation had been emitted by the uranium compound without the stimulation of sunlight. It was some of the work which followed Bequerel's discovery which helped to determine the makeup of the atom. ctivity 1 ctivity 2 ctivity 3 John Dalton Ludwig Boltzmann Matter matters timelinescience resources
