Als Physiker bei den Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill (New Jersey, 1945-1951) gehörte er zu der Arbeitsgruppe, die den Transistor erfand. Für diese Arbeit erhielt er 1956 gemeinsam mit zwei Kollegen, den amerikanischen Physikern Shockley, William Bradford und Walter H. Brattain, den Nobelpreis für Physik. 1972 erhielt er gemeinsam mit den amerikanischen Physikern Leon N. Cooper und John R. Schrieffer wiederum den Nobelpreis für Physik. Sie hatten eine Theorie aufgestellt, die die Supraleitfähigkeit - das Verschwinden des elektrischen Widerstandes bestimmter Metalle und Legierungen bei Temperaturen in der Nähe des absoluten Temperaturnullpunktes - erklärte.
