Pravda.RU President Putin Meets Nobel Prize Winner Zhores Alferov Russian President Vladimir Putin has met wellknown scientist and Nobel Prizewinner zhores alferov. We addressed issues of scientific and educational http://newsfromrussia.com/science/2003/04/18/46085.html
Extractions: We addressed issues of scientific and educational development, the scientist said. According to him, the president "agreed that the development of today's economy must be based on high technology, particularly in the spheres with maximum "intellectual rent" /such as biotechnology, information technology and environmentally friendly power engineering/." We maintain a fairly high potential in these fields, assuming leadership in some of them, the scientist continued. The meeting also addressed the interrelation between science and education. Alferov believes there is no dividing them. According to him, modern science can and must work in education, set up its own educational institutions, "which is what we are doing now," while universities must revive their scientific departments.
Extractions: The name 'Peterburg 300' was given to a small planet N1978 SX2. The decision was made by the IAU based on the proposition by the Russian Academy of Sciences. The small planet was discovered on September 26, 1978 by the Crimea Astrophysical Observatory. The Russian Academy of Sciences proposed the name in connection with the tri-centennial jubilee of the city on the Neva. The planet has a diameter of 18 kilometres, its orbit is located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The planet's average distance from the sun is 476 million kilometres. 'If somebody wants to go there, we will ask for support,' said Yakovlev.

Alferov has been awarded his prize for "developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics." With the Russian editorial office of Institute of Physics Publishing situated in the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, Professor Alferov has had close ties with the Institute for many years, and regularly publishes his work in the Institute journals, Semiconductor Science and Technology, and Nanotechnology. Currently, he has three papers in press with the Institute of Physics. The Institute's Russian editorial office was established in 1990 and gathers scientific papers from Russia for Institute of Physics journals. Scientific staff at the Ioffe have worked closely with the Institute for many years. Relations between the Institute of Physics and the Ioffe were reinforced when Professor Alferov came to speak at a conference of all editors of the Institute journals held at the University of Bath in 1999. He gave a plenary lecture about nano-scale physics research in Russia and captivated his audience with an account of the history and politics of science funding in his country.
