Extractions: On Tuesday, when Nobel Prize winner Academician Zhores Alferov turns 75, the famous physicist's bronze bust was unveiled at St. Petersburg Humanitarian University of Trade Unions. It became the first bust on the Alley of Honorary Doctors of this higher school. Men of science and art from St. Petersburg participated in the ceremony, including actor Kirill Lavrov, composer Andrei Petrov, scientist Nikolai Skatov, and art director and choreographer Boris Eifman. All of them are honorary doctors of the Humanitarian University. Zhores Alferov did not participate in the ceremony because of ailing health. Writer Daniil Granin addressed the audience by praising the physicist's distinguished services. "As director of the Physics Institute, he has at his heart science which has always been his lifework," said Mr. Granin. The University press service reported that Albert Charkin, a famous sculptor and merited artist of Russia, made the bust. It is the first of the 17 sculptures being made by decision of the Scientific Council that wished to immortalize all its 17 honorary doctors. The next monuments to be erected in the alley will be the busts of composer Georgy Sviridov and scientist Dmitry Likhachev.

He worked and defended his candidate (1961) and doctoral (1970) dissertations at the loffe Physico-Technical Institute (USSR). In 2000, Zh. Alferov was awarded, together with H. Kroemer, Nobel Prize in Physics for basic work on information and communication technology particularly for development of semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics. As shown theoretically and experimentally in the investigations carried out by the laureate at the loffe Institute, it is possible to control in a fundamentally new way electron and light fluxes in semiconductor heterostructures artificial crystals grown from semiconductors of different compositions. Lasers, light-emitting diodes, photodi-odes, transistors, and solar cells, developed on the basis of these heterostructures, are universally used in modern systems for information transfer and storage and in space power engineering. Since 1987 till 2003 Zh. Alferov has been Director of the loffe Institute. At present, Zh. Alferov is Chairman of the Presidium of the St Petersburg Scientific Center and Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Zhores Alferov Jack Kilby Herbert Kroemer The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics to Zhores Alferov, director of the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in Saint Petersburg, Russia; Herbert Kroemer of the University of California, Santa Barbara; and Jack Kilby, now retired from Texas Instruments Inc (TI) in Dallas, Texas, "for basic work on information and communication technology." Alferov and Kroemer will share half of the SKr 9 million (about $900 000) prize "for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed and opto-electronics." Kilby is to receive the other half "for his part in the invention of the integrated circuit." The twin pillars of today's electronic society are computers and communication systems. Both have grown very rapidly over the past decade, as attested by the increased role of the Internet and the World Wide Web in both business and private life. In acknowledging the impact of these technologies, the Nobel committee singled out two inventions that have been driving this development: the integrated circuit (IC) and semiconductor heterostructures.
