   Extractions: Following discussions with representatives of the Moscow Mathematical Society and the Russian Academy of Sciences, Council agreed to establish in 2000 a new scheme to help young Russian mathematicians to visit the UK and to provide some financial support. Visitors are chosen by Programme Committee from nominations made by the Council of the Moscow Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences, or by the head of the host department in the UK. Individuals may also apply personally. They each come to the UK for a period of between two and three weeks and give a series of about eight lectures on the work of their groups in Russia as well as their own contributions to it. They are expected to write up these lectures for publication in a series of occasional volumes in the Lecture Notes series, and they receive an advance on royalties of £1000 on receipt of the manuscript in publishable form. The Society will pay actual travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs up to a maximum of £1500. Nominations or applications under this scheme should be sent to the Programme Secretary, London Mathematical Society, De Morgan House, 57-58 Russell Square, London WC1B 4HS, in the form of a brief letter. Before a nomination or application is sent, preliminary discussion should be held between the potential host department in the UK and the potential visitor. The international community thus recognizes the increasingly important role of mathematics and mathematical education in the development of civilization of all mankind in the second millenium. The 9th International Congress on mathematical education will be held in July-August of 2000 in Japan. National and regional conferences focusing on the problems of mathematical education will take place in many countries. Russia must not be an exception. In September of 2000 will be held the All-Russian Conference on Mathematical Education, where scholars will discuss burning issues concerning teaching mathematics in public schools and institutions of higher learning. It should be noted that such conferences haven't taken place during the whole Soviet-Russian period. The achievements of the Soviet-Russian mathematical science and mathematical education are universally known and generally recognized. It was precisely these accomplishments that formed the basis of real progress in the former Soviet Union. The Russian mathematical school had a great influence on the development of world science and education in the second half of the 20th century. Its disciples are working in all major research centers of our planet.
