Extractions: Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration. I just wanted to show off the font... Most of the mathematicans we hear about come from ancient Greece or Rome or something, so mathematicians only seem to exist in the past, and for us in Asia, in far away lands. So now, we shall introduce 2 Asian mathematicians who lived in this century. Chang Sun-Yung Alice Abu Allah Mohammad ibn Jabir al'Battani Chang Sun-Yung Alice was born in Ci-an, China on the 24th of March, 1948. In 1970 she received her B.S. degree from the National University of Taiway. She came to the United States to pursue graduate studies in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, earning her Ph.D in 1974. Chang spent one year at the State University of New York at Buffalo, then became Hedrick Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the Univesity of California, Los Angeles, during 1975-77. She then taught at the University of Maryland for three years before returning to the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1980 as an associate professor, later promoted to full professor. Chang's research interests are in the fields of nonlinear partial differential equations and isospectral geometry. In 1995 she was awarded the

Incompetent Professor - Information Technology Services I think that the basic assumptions of most asian mathematicians is that mathematicsis practical, you don t really need to supplement language to understand http://www.physicsforums.com/archive/t-82854_Incompetent_Professor.html
Extractions: The problem is this, we are solving differential equations using the LaPlace Transform for differential equations with non-constant coefficients. So on the board he does the LaPlace transform just fine, but when it comes to partial fractal decomposition to solve the actual differential equation he insists that if the factor in the denominator is a prime quadratic we do not need an Ax+B term. He says that unlike in calculus where we wanted to integrate something that we only need a constant term. This to me seems to be completely ludicrous because you cannot set two things equal which are not equal so when you solve the inverse LaPlace you get an answer that is not relevant to your initial problem.
ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY IN EAST ASIA successful in assembling a wide spectrum of East asian mathematicians, andgave them a welcome chance to discuss current state of algebraic geometry. http://www.worldscibooks.com/mathematics/5190.html
Extractions: This book is the proceedings of the conference "Algebraic Geometry in East Asia" which was held in International Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) during August 3 to August 10, 2001. As the breadth of the topics covered in this proceedings demonstrate, the conference was indeed successful in assembling a wide spectrum of East Asian mathematicians, and gave them a welcome chance to discuss current state of algebraic geometry.

Calakmul National Park, Mexico For many years modern people looked on the Maya as tranquil, thoughtful, mysterious counterpoints to the prosaic, bloodthirsty Aztecs. They were the Greeks of the New World to the Aztecs Romans. The image worked fairly well. Since nobody could translate Mayan hieroglyphs, and the civilizations great cities had become deserted long before Europeans arrived in Mexico, people were free to speculate almost whatever they wanted about the Maya. Where Cortez had Bernal Diaz del Castillo to chronicle the conquest of Tenochtitlan and the Aztec empire, the witnesses to the decline of Mayan civilization had been dead for hundreds of years. The gradual unearthing and restoration of Mayan cities presented the world with a romantic vision of stolid tropical farmers who had husbanded their surpluses to build urban centers with magnificent temples, plazas and public buildings. From the tops of some of those structures, sophisticated stone-age astronomers observed the skies and created a calendar more accurate than our own Gregorian. Independent of Asian mathematicians, Mayan mathematicians conceived of the zero. Their cities lasted hundreds of years, dotted throughout the lush rainforest of present day southeastern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. Then, seemingly overnight, they were abandoned and the civilization collapsed. Some scholars speculated that an ecological disaster, such as over-farming or the destruction of aquifers, strained the carrying ability of the land. The cities, which relied on provisioning by the countryside, could no longer function when the farmers themselves were starving.

Extractions: This volume features substantive biographical essays on 59 women from around the world who have made significant contributions to mathematics from antiquity to the present. Designed for secondary school students and the general public, each profile describes major life events, obstacles faced and overcome, educational and career milestonesincluding a discussion of mathematical research in non-technical termsand interests outside of mathematics. Although the collection includes historical women, the emphasis is on contemporary mathematicians, many of whom have not been profiled in any previous work. Also included are the contributions of minority women, including 10 African-American, Latina, and Asian mathematicians. DOI:
