Extractions: Identifying High Performing Texas Schools and School Districts and Their Methods of Success in Middle School Math and Algebra I End-Of-Course Performance Executive Summary The goals of this study were: To identify school districts and campuses, which appear to perform consistently better than expected in preparing students for TAAS and Algebra I End-of-Course tests, and To identify the characteristics, educational policies, and practices of those districts and campuses which help to explain their higher performances. The focus is upon middle school math and Algebra I End-of-Course performance. However, portions of the analysis also pertain to elementary school math as well as reading performance both for middle schools and elementary schools. Part I is divided into three sections. Section I describes the method used to identify districts where all or most schools appear to be performing above expectation, based upon average student SES. The procedure results in an index referred to as the district performance quotient (DPQ). Section 2 then applies this methodology to those districts, which contain at least three middle schools. The procedure is carried out separately with TAAS math and reading scores, at both the elementary and middle school levels. Extractions: Back to Middle School Teachers' Place As a 7th grade math teacher, I like to make mathematics as visual as possible. For Pi Day, my students make Pi necklaces. I use Pi as a way of introducing my students to the idea of an irrational number. After studying decimals that terminate or repeat, I ask them to bring in a can and we compare the circumference to the diameter by dividing C by d. This is how they find out what Pi is all about. I have them make a Pi necklace to reinforce the idea that some numbers never repeat or end. We usually use from 100 to 300 beads, depending on the size of the bead. They assign a color to each digit (including 0) and then string beads of those colors into a necklace, using the digits of Pi as their guide. Some students make their own beads with polymer clay and others string store-bought beads of all sizes. The first bead, representing the number three, is bigger than the rest. (In the illustration, the necklace has a big silver triangular "bead" as the whole number 3 part of Pi.)

Muhammed was born in 780 A.D. and died in 850 A.D. He was an Arabic mathematician who introduced the Hindu decimal system and the use of zero into Arabic mathematics. He also extended the work of Diophantis on algebraic equations in a book, the title which included the word al-jabr (transposition) from which the modern word algebra is derived. I chose this mathematician because he sounded interesting, and important to the world of mathematics. Jennifer, 1996 Although no one knows for sure, people speculate that Archimedes was born sometime around 287 B.C. As a boy he probably attended school in Alexandria, which was the center of Greek learning. After school Archimedes went to live in Syracuse, Sicily, which was then a Greek colony. Here he did much work for the king, Hiero. Archimedes made many discoveries in Math and Physics. One of his mathematical advances was with pi. Archimedes found a way to determine a more exact value of pi. He showed the value of pi was somewhere between 3 1/7 and 3 10/71. This discovery made it possible to solve many problems relating to the area of a circle and the volume of cylinders. Another invention was that of a new type of numeration system. Archimedes' new system worked much better with large numbers than the Roman and Greek systems.
