The FUSE Satellite This series of Educational Kits, ``Exploring Our Universe: From The Classroom to Outer Space'' is being developed as an initiative of the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) Project's Public Outreach and Education Program. The purpose of these education kits is to help secondary school students develop an understanding of how what they learn in science and math classes relates to the world in which they live, and how it applies to modern science and technology. The first kit, ``Spectroscopy: The Study of Light'' , focuses on how astronomers study and use light to learn about the universe: its origin, its evolution, and its fate. This puts basic concepts about light and the electromagnetic spectrum into a practical and exciting context. The second kit, The FUSE Satellite: Observing form Space , focuses on the science and mathematics of the satellite itself, allowing students to learn by solving problems related to the operation of a real satellite. Both kits relate classroom activities to an on-going NASA mission and provide the opportunity to follow important, exciting events.

For many teachers, it consists of sitting at a desk with a stack of report cards on one side and a schedule of fifteen- or twenty-minute appointments on the other. In the short time available, you try to describe what's on the report card and ask if the parent has any questions. By the eighth conference, you're tired and wondering, "Did I already say that?" While the conference is supposed to be about the child, in fact, the child is totally removed. More and more teachers are finding success with student-led parent conferences. Here students have the opportunity to reflect on and describe their learning. From both the teacher and their child, parents find out what and how their child is learning. In addition, teachers are able to educate parents about the complexity of learning and to remove the aura of secrecy that so often surrounds the assessment process. The goals of student-led parent conferences are: Encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their academic performance.

Extractions: Everyday Mathematics (Everyday Math, aka Chicago Math) is a K-6 curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) and published by Everyday Learning Corporation, a part of SRA McGraw-Hill. A notable feature of Everyday Mathematics is its presentation of multiple methods or procedures for the basic operations of arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. When the multiplication facts have not been committed to memory the thought process, during problem solving, is interrupted. If so, then the new University of Oregon joint masters program between the math department and the school of education might be just what you are looking for. The program allows you to graduate in two years, including both summers, with a masters in math and a teaching license. Math Student Results Continue to Slide in National Euclid Contest For the fourth year in the row, the performance of B.C. students deteriorated relative to those in Ontario in the Euclid Mathematics Contest, a 2.5-hour national exam based on Grade 12 curriculum. The percentage of B.C. students on the Honour Roll was 18 per cent in 2004, 25 per cent in 2003, 27 per cent in 2002 and 41 per cent in 2001. More than 3,000 contestants from 166 B.C. schools signed up for the exam on April 19, along with almost 9,000 from Ontario and 2,500 from the rest of Canada. The top 70 BC students and teachers from the top schools are invited to UBC for a special day of activities on May 30, 2005.
