Extractions: counts! Maryland Delmar United Kingdom Australia ... Botswana My fourth graders have written some word (math) puzzles for you and hope you will compute the answers and then send us some. Take a look at the word puzzles that are here. Be sure to write a number sentence for each puzzle like this: My number is the days in a week minus the eyes on my face times the months in a year. 7 - 2 x 12 = 60 It would be very interesting if we added a cultural dimension to our project like this: The number of letters in the word "computer" times the points on David's Star minus the number of pennies in a dime equals what number? This sends us to some research on David's Star as well as doing a little math. You might have to search to find out how many pennies there are in a US dime. This is just one example. I am sure there are other things in your culture that have numbers. This can be a fun project. Here are some starter puzzles for you: From Ms. Everhart's class in Maryland 1. There are reptiles in the Woodside Wetlands. Edwin, Alan, and James want to know how to divide the reptiles evenly so each one gets an equal number. They had counted 462 reptiles. How many reptiles will each boy get?

The second daily puzzle is taken from a book by "the puzzle king" Henry Ernest Dudeney called 536 Puzzles and Curious Problems , Souvenir Press 1968. See the MathsNet recommended books page . Dudeney (the name is pronounced to rhyme with "scrutiny") was born in Sussex, England in 1857. His father, John Dudeney, a shepherd, had taught himself mathematics, whilst tending his sheep on the downs above Lewes, 50 miles south of London. A self-taught mathematician also, Henry never went to college. His first book The Canterbury Puzzles was published in 1907. Others followed at intervals until his death in 1930. Puzzles -- LEGO This page exhibits more brainteasing mechanical puzzles all built out of LEGO bricks. Most of the puzzles were inspired by classic puzzles that have been http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/puzzles.html
Extractions: My set of LEGO Pentominoes was just the beginning. This page exhibits more brain-teasing mechanical puzzles all built out of LEGO bricks. Most of the puzzles were inspired by classic puzzles that have been available in the past, but I had never seen them built out of LEGO pieces. So, if you are intrigued by such things, read on (and if you would like me to build a particular puzzle for you, rest assured that while they are not cheap, they are considerably less expensive than, say, a White Rabbit Mosaic . I will add more puzzles to this page as I create them. Another version of the basic Pentominoes, this set is checkered; the pieces are built of alternating cubes of black and white. Since there are 12 pentominoes each consisting of 5 squares, a total of 60 squares are occupied. I constructed a blue edged tray of dimension 8-by-8 squares (not 8x8 LEGO studs - each 'square' is a 2x2 LEGO stud size), and in the middle of the tray I built a 2x2 square to fill in the remaining 4 squares (since an 8x8 tray is 64 squares, four more than the pentominoes will fill). The task, of course, is to place all of the pentominoes into the tray. Furthermore, when completed, a perfect checkboard pattern should result.
