The whole history of mathematics is interwoven with mathematical games which have led to the study of many areas of mathematics. Number games, geometrical puzzles, network problems and combinatorial problems are among the best known types of puzzles. The Rhind papyrus shows that early Egyptian mathematics was largely based on puzzle type problems. For example the papyrus, written in around 1850 BC, contains a rather familiar type of puzzle. You can see a picture of the Rhind papyrus Seven houses contain seven cats. Each cat kills seven mice. Each mouse had eaten seven ears of grain. Each ear of grain would have produced seven hekats of wheat. What is the total of all of these? Similar problems appear in Fibonacci 's Liber Abaci written in 1202 and the familiar St Ives Riddle of the 18 th Century based on the same idea (and on the number 7). Greek mathematics produced many classic puzzles. Perhaps the most famous are from

Several of these pages have moved or died in the last few months, and there's lots of new stuff I need to add, but I've been busy with my real job . Thanks for your patience. Mathematicians use the words "game theory" in two different senses. The more common sense of the word includes things like the Prisoner's Dilemma, poker, the New York Stock Exchange, or other "imperfect-information" games. Research in this type of game theory makes a lots of money for a lot of people, and has even resulted in a few Nobel prizes. An introductory sketch is available at Drexel University. Those aren't the kind of mathematical games I like. Combinatorial game theory tries to analyze the outcomes of "perfect-information" games like Nim and Tic-tac-toe. More difficult real-world examples are Hex, Reversi, Mancala, Checkers, Chess, Shogi, and Go. Nancy Casey has a

Clever Games For Clever People Includes map coloring, dots and boxes, and calculation games. From John Conway s book On Numbers and games . http://www.cs.uidaho.edu/~casey931/conway/games.html
Extractions: These games are all taken from: Conway, John. 1976. On Numbers and Games. New York: Academic Press, Inc. John Conway says in the preface to this book that he wrote it to tell about the realationships between two of his favorite subjects: theories of transfinite numbers and mathematical games. Many of us have used logic and numbers to explain how to win a game, but mathematician Conway was not about to do something so ordinary. In this book he takes that idea and turns it inside out by showing how games can be used to describe numbers. Just play these games and try to win. As you understand the games and become expert at playing them, you will be building tools for understanding numbers and becoming an expert at playing with them. Describe what you understand about the games. Use words and pictures that make sense to you and your friends. If you play these games enough, you will be come so completely clever at them that you can always have a strategy that will win (as long as you don't play them with someone who is quite as clever about them as you are.)
