Arney George Rosenstein Abstract: The predecessor of the first national Putnam Competition was a mathematics contest between Harvard and the United States Military Academy. The details of this contest from William Lowell Putnam's original idea for academic competition between schools in 1921 through the examination day in 1933 and later consequences of the competition are provided. Much of this history was compiled from original letters between the principle organizers found in a historical file of the Department of Mathematics, United States Military Academy (USMA). The role of the Mathematical Association of America, which has been involved in all 50 national Putnam Competitions, in this 1933 contest is also explained. A copy of the 22 question examination is provided. Background In an article in the Harvard Graduates' Magazine [1] in December, 1921, William Lowell Putnam suggested the development of academic competitions between teams of undergraduate students of different schools in regular college studies. He believed that the motive of winning laurels for their college in team competition would provide students more interest in their studies. He concluded the article with: "It seems probable that the competition which has inspired young men to undertake and undergo so much for the sake of athletic victories might accomplish some result in academic fields." The merits of his suggestion were shared by Mrs. Putnam and her brother, A. Lawrence Lowell, President of Harvard. Mrs. Putnam established a trust fund in her will to support such competition [1].

Extractions: Welcome to the KCSOS Home Page Although it is not scored as a team competition, Fruitvale Junior High distinguished itself with nine category finalists and Murray Middle School of Ridgecrest was a close second with eight among approximately 800 students from 33 schools who competed at the 34th annual Kern County Middle School Mathematics Field Day held at Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield on May 15. The competition, sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Westchester Kiwanis Club, Bakersfield Math Council, California Math Council, Kern County Science Foundation and Ridgeview High, is a fun day of problem solving games and competitions. Some have playful names such as leap frog and mad hatter. Still others offer the flavor of athletic competition with names such as power relay, circuit training, individual medley and triathlon games. Sixth, seventh, eighth-graders or those in an algebra class for which they will receive high school credit compete in the series of written events testing their math skills individually and in teams of two, three, four and five by grade level. One of the last events of the day, individual medley, had several classrooms on the Ridgeview campus packed with students tapping fingers on hand held calculators, scratching their heads and looking toward the sky for answers. These were sixth, seventh and eighth graders. According to event organizer and Kern County Superintendent of Schools Mathematics/Science Coordinator Anne Santer, all of the questions were written to the California Content Standards. See if you would be able to answer this typical question from the test: If the difference of the squares of two consecutive natural numbers equals 15, what is the smaller natural number? The choices were 2, 5, 7 or 8. Give up? The correct answer was 7.

For the 2004-05 school year, dedicated mathletes can earn one by getting a total of points of which at least and at most have to be service points. Students can earn these points through 8th period contests, service opportunities, and bonus contests. We expect students to earn approximately 2/3 of the points available in each competition. The competition takes place on the first Saturday in December each year and consists of a total of 12 math problems given in a morning and an afternoon session. Of the top 5 students ("Putnam Fellows"), three were from MIT: Reid Barton The Putnam exam is a difficult set of 12 questions, each worth 10 points for a total of 120 possible points. Nearly 4,000 students sat for the exam, giving up 6 hours of their weekend this past December. Often, the median score is (meaning that more than half of the test takers earned no points), and usually is 1 or 2 (yes, out of 120). Here's problem #1 from this year, probably the most accessible of the problems (and one of the only problems I can write without special characters).
