Overview Benefits CAM Systems CNC Controls Checkers Deploying STEP-NC AP-238 CC1 using our ST-Machine tools helps your organization capture business benefits in: STEP-NC can reduce the cost of prove-out and enable better workload balancing for the following reasons: The post is replaced with a converter. The converter does not have to perform any mathematical transformations and can be supplied as a standard option in the CNC vendors catalog. Posts are written by a third party vendor as a piece of custom software that is only used for one control only. Therefore, they are inherently less reliable than software that is used by thousands of people on thousands of controls. The toolpaths that are sent to the control use workpiece coordinates. Therefore, a system can be built to show the paths that are going to be executed in advance of the dry and slow runs (a forward plot). The operator can then decide which paths need to be simulated in a dry-run and which do not because they are no where near the system limits. He or she can also see the future path of the slow-run and be less conservative with respect to reducing the feed-rate when the path is going to be in safe areas The AP-238 specification allows the product geometry, fixture geometry, cutting tool geometry and tool holder geometry to be communicated to the control where it can be combined with the already known machine geometry. Many CAM systems contain simulators that detect collisions. AP-238 allows these systems to be used on the control where they will further help the operator reduce the time and stress of prove-out.

Extractions: It is now common knowledge that plants and trees serve living creatures in multifarious ways. They prevent floods and soil erosion, give off oxygen, provide food and shelter for both animals and man and a source of medicine to fight all kinds of diseases. But neither the environmentalists nor the average modern individual is aware of the hidden life of plants or of their extra sensory powers. It was the American polygraph expert, Cleve Backster, who first brought up the incredible idea that plants are aware of their environment and have rudimentary emotions or feelings. Subsequently, he proved that hypothesis beyond doubt. He discovered that plants reacted to the death of other living creatures even though the doomed victims were not in the same room.

And, as Hanson notes, "we were assured that stagnant water would submerge the city for months, even as our screens showed dry, lighted streets, torrents pumped back out and pools evaporating under scorching heat." In fact, the MSM was so busy pointing its finger at President Bush that it largely missed the magnitude and accomplishments of the federal relief effort. Nor did it competently play the blame game, failing to ask the basic question of how this relief effort measured up against past ones. Here's Hanson verdict: For all the media's efforts to turn the natural disaster of New Orleans into a racist nightmare, a death knell for one or the other political parties or an indictment of American culture at large, it was none of that at all. What we did endure instead were slick but poorly educated journalists, worried not about truth but about pre-empting their rivals with an ever-more-hysterical story, all in a fuzzy context of political correctness about race, the environment and the war.

Is it realistic to demonstrate a program that works two different ways? Yes! If you read the news you know that at least one major manufacturer of voting systems does something similar they use one program during tests, and a different program during real elections. How can we use formal methods to prove that applets on a smart card are isolated and do not read critical locations of each other? How can we safely eliminate array bound checks and null pointer checks in Java programs? - An attempt to solve such problems with standard programming logics like Hoare logic or dynamic logic will immediately fail, since the problems have to do with memory access and it is not even possible to formulate memory access properties of programs in these logics. For example, a simple property of a sorting algorithm, like that when sorting the subarray in the interval from l to r the algorithm reads array elements a[i] with index i between l and r only, cannot be proved in these logics, since the property cannot be expressed in the formal language of the logics. We therefore extend our logic for Abstract State Machines by a read predicate that allows to make precise statements about the accesses of locations of an ASM. The logic can be used to prove security properties of ASMs like that the machine does not read locations containing critical information or that all accesses of the machine to the abstract memory are permitted. The logic is sound and complete for hierarchical ASMs without cycles in the call graph and it is sound for turbo ASMs with possibly recursive rule declarations. It is integrated in the AsmKeY theorem prover, an extension of the KeY system developed at the University of Karlsruhe for modeling, specifying and verifying object-oriented programs, in particular JavaCard programs.

It was there that the machine was first demonstrated in 1769. It was later taken on tour by the showman Maelzel. Poe published his reflections on it in the Southern Literary Messenger for April 1836. Maelzel had a chess-player among his entourage which gave rise to speculations as to who might have been the "ghost" in his machine. Extractions: (This summary includes my argument, a method for judging the outcome of this bet and some other thoughts on how to measure awareness...) A. MY PERSPECTIVE... Even if a computer passes the Turing Test it will not really be aware that it has passed the Turing Test. Even if a computer seems to be intelligent and can answer most questions as well as an intelligent, self-aware, human being, it will not really have a continuum of awareness, it will not really be aware of what it seems to "think" or "know," it will not have any experience of it's own reality or being. It will be nothing more than a fancy inanimate object, a clever machine, it will not be a truly sentient being. Self-awareness is not the same thing as merely answering questions intelligently. Therefore even if you ask a computer if it is self-aware and it answers that it is self-aware and that it has passed the Turing Test, it will not really be self-aware or really know that it has passed the Turing Test. As John Searle and others have pointed out, the Turing Test does not actually measure awareness, it just measures information processing-particularly the ability to follow rules or at least imitate a particular style of communication. In particular it measures the ability of a computer program to imitate humanlike dialogue, which is different than measuring awareness itself. Thus even if we succeed in creating good AI, we won't necessarily succeed in creating AA ("Artificial Awareness").

I received a letter from a listener last week. Some of you might remember the comment that I made about four or five weeks ago that it's impossible for science to prove that there is no soul. This gentleman was a bit bothered because he felt I was speaking in a vacuum, as it were, and I really didn't know what I was talking about, and making a comment like that not only misleads my listeners into having a false sense of confidence about this issue, but also to those who know better it makes me a little bit foolish. The writer goes on to say, "[Adler] goes on a step further and says that if science is ever able to produce a machine that can conceptualize on a conversational level it will prove that the brain is sufficient to explain the mind and therefore do away with the necessity of postulating an immaterial mind." Adler doesn't believe this is possible, but the way to disprove the existence of the mind and therefore undercut the Christian position is to produce a machine that can conceptualize on a conversational level. And if it can do that then it will do what we think it takes a mind to do. That would prove that a mind is not necessary and therefore, by inference, would prove that human minds don't exist and Christianity would be discredited.

Extractions: Turing Machines II Peter Suber Philosophy Department Earlham College The last hand-out on Turing machines defined the basic concepts. This hand-out will apply them to the problem of computability and prove that not all functions can be computed by a Turing machine. As in the first hand-out , my exposition is based on those of George S. Boolos and Richard Jeffrey, Computability and Logic , Cambridge University Press, second edition, 1980; Gerald Massey, "On the Pedagogy of Turing Machines," The Computers and Philosophy Newsletter , 1,1 (Sept. 1986), 6-24; and Marvin Minsky, Computation: Finite and Infinite Machines , Prentice Hall, 1967. For the proofs that follow it will help to understand how to concatenate two T programs into one. We want to put two T programs end to end to make a third program that will run flawlessly with only minor revisions. To do this we take advantage of the conventions used in the first hand-out (1) that we read inputs from left to right and (2) that canonical halts leave the scanner on the leftmost digit of the output. With these conventions we need only stick the two programs back to back. The new program will perform the work of the first one first, and use its output as the input to the second. Two minor revisions are needed in the composite program. (1) Change the command names of the second program so that none coincides with any already used. This will guarantee consistency. The easy way to do this, if both programs use numerical command names and if the first program contains n consecutively numbered commands, is to add n to the number of each command in the second program. (2) Fill in the blanks of the table of the first program, where it would have halted, with the command to go to the first line of the second program. This will insure that the composite program will not halt until the second program has run.

The issues raised by this topic are largely oblique, if not orthogonal, to those treated in the philosophical literature on time travel. Most significantly, the so-called paradoxes of time travel do not play a substantial role in the physics literature on time machines. This literature equates the possibility of time travel with the existence of closed timelike curves (CTCs) or worldlines for material particles that are smooth, future-directed timelike curves with self-intersections.
The Tail Recursive SECD Machine While specifying the details of the inductive proof for the SECD machine, The correctness proof for the TRSECD machine requires roughly 50% more CPU http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/boyer/ftp/nqthm/trsecd/trsecd.html
Extractions: October 1996 Revised September 1997 Abstract. One method for producing verified implementations of programming languages is to formally derive them from abstract machines. Tail recursive abstract machines provide efficient support for iterative processes via the ordinary function calling mechanism. This document argues that the use of tail recursive abstract machines incurs only a small increase in theorem proving burden when compared with what is required when using ordinary abstract machines. The position is supported by comparing correctness proofs performed using the Boyer-Moore theorem prover. The cost of efficient support for iteration is small. More than twenty years ago, Gordon Plotkin published a famous paper that examines the relation between the Lambda Calculus and ISWIM, a programming language based on the Lambda Calculus ]. ISWIM has an operational semantics given by the SECD machine. The paper includes a proof that the semantics defined by the SECD machine is equivalent to a recursively defined function which implements applicative order evaluation of lambda terms. In that order, the bodies of lambda terms are not evaluated and the arguments of combinations are evaluated before they are substituted. For efficiently reasons, most programming languages in use today use applicative order evaluation. In addition, most functional programming languages require that their implementations be tail recursive. This means that programmers can use recursively defined functions to specify iterative processes.
