Extractions: Institute of Geometry, Vienna University of Technology, Austria Recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of using classical geometric methods for the solution of problems arising in Computer-Aided Design. Because of a poor coverage of classical geometry in most mathematics curricula and the lack of suitable textbooks, the promising results that have been obtained so far have been fully understood only by a rather limited number of experts. On the other hand, the results of geometry driven research have received a lot of interest and are well suited for inclusion in professional systems. Thus it seems a good idea to offer a course that aims at an introduction to central concepts of classical geometry and their applications in CAD. Classical geometric methods have been successfully applied to a variety of problems in Computer-Aided Design and Geometric Modeling, such as sweep surface design, animation and robot motion planning, segmentation and surface fitting in reverse engineering and NURBS representations of special functional forms of curves and surfaces (offsets, developable surfaces, blending surfaces,...). The applied classical material is located in a broad area, which includes projective geometry and classical differential geometry in its center and is surrounded by line geometry, sphere geometry, algebraic geometry, kinematical geometry and other geometric disciplines.

My approach is not to build applications, but simply to use IDLE as is, and Povray as is, with a few simple modules. The idea is to have students understand all the guts nothing is hidden "under the hood". Nothing up the sleaves... This isn't to say I'm not interested in alternative approaches. Just wanted to explain my technique. To "sell" what I have attempted: I have tried to layer the complexity in modules. There is a top level module - PyElements - which contains most of the simpler analytics on which the app runs. The simplicity of Python syntax allows the module, I hope, to be transparent, and would allow the student to follow the connection between graphical output and the analytics running it. The matrix math is a level below the simpler analytics . It is in fact a port to Python of the vecmath Java module that is distributed with Java3d. As such the extensive Java documentation basically works for it, and it should be accessible to the students looking into the analytics a bit deeper. Most of the GUI stuff which would be of programming interest only is isolated in separate modules. >

Since the Habanero framework provides a media for networked object oriented collaboration, various types of applications can u se the Habanero API to gain collaborative features. This is demonstrated in the case of the Geometry application. We also thought it was important to show how many modifications a developer would have to implement to turn their application or applet int o collaborative application using the NCSA Habanero API. This document is an overview of the process of converting the Geometry applet into a collaborative application. First, we must realize all collaborators must share a common state. So the question becomes, "What needs to be sent across the net when y ou play or when you join a session?". We must also keep in mind quick system response and minimal bandwidth use. While interacting with the Geometry application on your system, there is a minimum of three different states that need to be shared with e ach collaborator". These states include: the "point and click" action the AWT event sent across at that time, is the (x,y) coordinates when Mouse_UP occurs. On the other clients, these coordinates aref used to determine which point has moved and then the local instance of the application computes and displays the chan ges.
