Aeon - The Radically Different OS Microkernel manages hardware, provides some services to core kernel, a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), to support fuzzy logic (claims first OS to do so), objectorientation, parallel and distributed processing. Open Source, GPL http://aeonproject.sourceforge.net/
Extractions: The aeon Project Created On : 20 th Dec. 2001 Last updated : 10:12 PM 4 th May 2003 Mission Statement: To deliver a robust, reliable and evolving platform (in the form of an OS) for scientific research and the common man; providing out of the box support for fuzzy logic, object oriented paradigm, parallel and distributed processing. About aeon Project: Though the name 'aeon' was coined today (7:15 PM 20 th Dec. 2001), I ( V.Ganesh ) though of this project when I was in my 3rd semester at ISSC for Master's degree in Computer Science. Actually the word aeon (pronounced ee-on) means an immense time, an age or an indefinably long period of time. And I would like the 'aeon Project' to be out there for the people (specially scientists) for an aeon :). The specifications and ideas of the aeon project is very preliminary and currently are only my view. I don't want it to be like that and would like it to be an amalgamation of ideas from various minds and brains (of course if they are different ;)). In fact I want to replace all I's with We's as soon as possible... So all those interested please take some pain in reading a bit more about my current ideas and get involved... Detailed overview of the aeon Project: aeon as an OS will be built around a micro kernel architecture (*). The micro kernel will basically manage the core H/W which will provide certain services to the core kernel. The core kernel will be a Virtual Machine built around the Java (TM) Virtual Machine (JVM) specifications. The Virtual Machine will provide the services of object oriented paradigm, parallel and distributed processing and fuzzy logic support.

Chp: Fuzzy Logic Research And Life fuzzy logic, invented by Professor Lotfi Zadeh of UCBerkeley in the mid-1960s It is interesting to note that the actual applications of fuzzy logic are http://www.wtec.org/loyola/kb/c5_s4.htm
Extractions: Fuzzy logic, invented by Professor Lotfi Zadeh of UC-Berkeley in the mid-1960s, provides a representation scheme and a calculus for dealing with vague or uncertain concepts. It provides for the facile manipulation of such terms as "large," "warm," and "fast," which can simultaneously be seen to belong partially to two or more different, contradictory sets of values. Zadeh originally devised the technique as a means for solving problems in the soft sciences, particularly those that involved interactions between humans, and/or between humans and machines. Within the United States, with some exceptions, the technique has remained mainly of basic research interest. Terano and his colleagues now view fuzzy control as but the first way station on the road to human-friendly systems. The evolution is fuzzy control, to fuzzy expert systems, to intelligent robots, to integrated AI systems. The 1992 LIFE research plan shows work in two main areas: communication and machine intelligence. Under communication, LIFE is conducting research in fuzzy computing (including natural language and linguistic modeling applications) and intelligent interfaces (to both humans and robots). Under machine intelligence, LIFE is pursuing work in fuzzy associative memory (software only), image understanding, and intelligent robots (the scope of which was left vague in our discussions). A total of about 30 full-time researchers are involved in all of these efforts.

Extractions: Fuzzy Logic in Integrated Reasoning FuzzyCLIPS FuzzyCLIPS is an extension of the CLIPS bob.orchard@nrc.ca FuzzyJ Toolkit for the Java(tm) Platform and FuzzyJess The FuzzyJ Toolkit is a set of Java(tm) classes that can be used to build fuzzy logic systems. The toolkit's API can be used standalone to create fuzzy rules and perform fuzzy reasoning. It can also be used with Jess , the Expert System Shell from the Sandia National Laboratories providing a capability that is similar to but in many ways more flexible than FuzzyCLIPS. This integration with Jess, FuzzyJess , has been carefully planned with the Jess author so that the effort to maintain and follow Jess revisions will require minimal effort. The toolkit is currently at version 1.6 (***NEW*** as of May 30, 2005). User feedback is welcomed and will help us shape future versions of the FuzzyJ Toolkit.

Fuzzy Multidimensional Logic Bivalent, or two state, logic is just a subset of the more powerful methods of fuzzy logic, introduced here, which reject the law of the excluded middle. http://www.calresco.org/lucas/fuzzy.htm
Extractions: but that does not stop us making assertions." Carneades, 214-129 BCE "The facts were always fuzzy or vague or inexact... Science treated the gray or fuzzy facts as if they were the black-white facts of math. Yet no one had put forth a single fact about the world that was 100% true or 100% false." Bart Kosko, Fuzzy Thinking, 1994, Preface Logic to most people relates to two state thinking, the idea that the outcome can only be either true or false, 1 or 0, right or wrong. This form of logic dates back to ancient Greece and is perfectly adequate to answer simple questions in single dimensions, for example, if A is 1 and B is what is A AND B ? It can be extended, as is done in Boolean algebra to more complex questions, as long as all the parts can be described using the same restricted alphabet of two symbols. Such logic is a deductive way of understanding consequences, and a highly valuable intellectual technique. But this sort of logic is inadequate when we need to reason about variables that have more than two values, or in cases where multiple incompatible variables are involved. Yet we still need to make decisions in these cases, so how can we proceed ? Bivalent, or two state, logic is just a sub-set of a more powerful type of logic known as fuzzy logic, so here we will introduce this subject and show how it can be used to evaluate choices both in the multi-valued scenarios of one variable and more importantly in the multi-dimensional scenarios common to complex systems incorporating multiple variables.

The idea of fuzzy logic was first advanced by Dr. Lotfi Zadeh of the University of California at Berkeley in the 1960s. Dr. Zadeh was working on the problem of computer understanding of natural language. Natural language (like most other activities in life and indeed the universe) is not easily translated into the absolute terms of and 1. (Whether everything is ultimately describable in binary terms is a philosophical question worth pursuing, but in practice much data we might want to feed a computer is in some state in between and so, frequently, are the results of computing.) Fuzzy logic includes and 1 as extreme cases of truth (or "the state of matters" or "fact") but also includes the various states of truth in between so that, for example, the result of a comparison between two things could be not "tall" or "short" but ".38 of tallness."
