Impacts The increased investment has rather resulted in: Increased poverty due to retrenchment, employment uncertainties, repatriation of extractive sector wealth, discriminatory tax regimes, low royalties, and general inequality regarding benefits sharing. Extractions: Essential Elements in the Mine Development Process After working on some 25 mining projects over the last 20 years, many of them involving cross-cultural situations, the following elements seem essential for a successful mine development process. Biology can resolve only about 50% of mining issues termed "environmental"; the other half can be dealt with only by understanding and working on the social and cultural concerns of nearby communities, regional towns and the NGOs and politicians of capital cities. For example, high heavy metal levels in a lake because of drainage through a waste rock pile can be solved with a lime flocculation system. Convincing the residents of a community who draw their potable water from that lake that their water supply is safe is something else again. In the mine development process, the Environmental Impact Study should have a Social Impact Assessment and Management component which will identify and address the social and cultural issues created by the proposed mine. A systematic program of public education and dialogue will be needed to develop informed majority public understanding, acceptance and support for the project.

A VE is created when a combination of one or more technologies (3D graphics, acoustics, haptics) is used to produce surroundings that is either familiar to a viewer, such as inside a building, or enables a viewer to be placed in a surrounding that is normally inaccessible, such as a particle accelerator. The main benefit of VE is user interaction in real-time with little awareness of the human-computer interface. Research focused on developing toolkits and software frameworks that would be of benefit to the mining industry in visualising geostatistical computations. This emphasis was later extended to supporting research that combined haptic and visualisation technologies, and to investigating their cross-industry capabilities.

It has been expanded to support environmental studies related to petroleum development. For example, a mining company may have research commitments for the environmental assessment and water licensing stages of mine development. Members of MPERG would identify those projects planned by the company which could have general application across the Yukon by the addition of extra funding or by broadening the scope of the work. An added feature of research commissioned by the Mining and Petroleum Environment Research Group is that in addition to the final technical report, the final project results must be provided in non-technical language. The results of research undertaken by MPERG would therefore be disseminated to a broad audience, including the general public, First Nations and communities.
