Extractions: GOVERNMENT STUDIES OF HEALTH EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL TOBACCO SMOKE IARC Monographs Programme Declares Second-Hand Tobacco Smoke Carcinogenic To Humans; Links additional kinds of cancer to smoking A scientific working group of 29 experts from 12 countries convened by the Monographs Programme of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO), Lyon, France, has reviewed all significant published evidence related to tobacco smoking and cancer, both active and involuntary. Its conclusions, released in June, 2002, unsurprisingly confirmed the cancer-causing effects of active smoking, which an earlier working group had considered back in 1986. However, it now concluded its evaluation of the carcinogenic risks associated with involuntary smoking, and IARC now classifies second-hand smoke as carcinogenic to humans. This report is very significant because it places a prestigious international organization officially on record as finding secondhand smoke to be a carcinogen, i.e., a substance which causes cancer in humans.
