Food Economics is the social science that examines the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, along with the allocation of resources, within society. Since economics often deals with tradeoffs giving up one thing in order to get another it is commonly referred to as the dismal science . However, gaining insight into the study of economics can increase both our understanding of, and participation in, the world in which we live by providing tools to help individuals, households, businesses, or governments determine the financial value of something and/or to make choices. Given that economics involves looking at the decision-making process, it can be applied to matters that include a variety of alternatives, even to such things as education, marriage, health, and the environment. The most basic premise which much of economics is based is that of limits or scarcity that the wants of society will always exceed the resources available, requiring choices and decisions to be made. These decisions include what is produced, how it is produced, how much will be produced, who it will be produced by, and how it will be distributed. The costs associated with producing and distributing good and services, as well as the decisions made by and interaction between buyers and sellers, are key forces that affect the economy as a whole.
