Extractions: Findings reports on ongoing operational, economic and sector work carried out by the World Bank and its member governments in the Africa Region. It is published periodically by the Africa Technical Department on behalf of the Region. Sub-Saharan Africa's demographic, agriculture and environmental problems are closely linked in a nexus of mutually reinforcing causality chains. Key linkages are found in traditional crop production and livestock husbandry methods, traditional land tenure and land use practices, traditional responsibilities of women in rural production and household maintenance, and traditional methods of utilizing woodland and forest resources. These systems and practices, well suited to people's survival needs on Africa's fragile resource endowment when population densities were low and populations stable or growing only slowly, came under increasing strain with the rapid acceleration of population growth that began when mortality rates declined sharply in the 1950s while birth rates remained high. The pace of evolution of these systems has been inadequate in the face of dramatically intensifying pressure of more people on finite stocks of natural resources. Extractions: Agriculture With farmers managing almost half of the EUs land area, the agricultural sector is a major source of pressure on Europes environment. Over the past five decades, the European Unions Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) - accounting for around half of the EU budget - has encouraged the sector to become more and more intensive, as has the growing globalisation of the worlds economy. As a result, the agricultural sector is responsible for a large share of the pollution of surface waters and seas by nutrients, for the loss of biodiversity, and for pesticide residues in groundwater. Reforms of the CAP in the 1990s, and measures taken by the sector itself, have brought about some improvements, but more is needed to balance agricultural production, rural development, and the environment. webmaster@eea.eu.int
