Extractions: The environment that we live in is continually changing as a result of natural and human-induced effects. All people who live on the Earth have a stewardship, or responsibility, to understand, care for, and preserve the changing environment of our planet. Natural changes to the environment have always occurred throughout the history of the planet, often following repetitive cycles or trends. A significant amount of time, money, and energy is used each year to identify and understand past changes to the environment so that present changes can be understood and future changes can be predicted. In contrast, human-induced changes to the environment have only become significant over the last couple of centuries. As the human population increases, the resultant environmental changes will continue to increase as well. One of the best ways to see how the environment is changing is to compare the environment today with the environment of the past. Past changes to the environment can sometimes be stored, or archived, organically (plant or animal life) or inorganically (lake sediments, rock cores, glacial ice, etc.). The Global Environmental Change Research Project has focused on glaciers as the means of studying past and present changes to the environment. Additional areas of research that are based on the

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research ( BER ) has established the Global Change Education Program (GCEP) to promote undergraduate and graduate training in support of the Department's global change research activities. Global change research encompasses a wide variety of study areas, including atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climatology, and terrestrial processes. Global change research is supported by BER through the Atmospheric Science Program ( ASP ), the Environmental Meteorology Program (EMP), the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement ( ARM ) Program, the Terrestrial Carbon Processes ( TCP ) effort, the Program for Ecosystem Research ( PER ), and studies carried out under the direction of the National Institute for Global Environmental Change ( NIGEC ). Other studies address integrated assessments, predictions, and policy, as well as paleoclimatology and earth system processes. The two components of GCEP are the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience ( SURE ) and the Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships ( GREF ). A major goal of GCEP is to involve undergraduate students at the end of their sophomore or junior year in BER-supported global change research, then continue this experience during subsequent undergraduate summers. SURE is designed to support individual undergraduate students during multiple years. To further improve the quality of emerging scientists in disciplines related to global change research, SURE students will be encouraged to apply for GREF graduate fellowships and postdoctoral study programs.

The purpose of this guide is to help you locate key documents and data sets that pertain to human dimensions of global environmental change related to agriculture. Although the aim is to provide the most relevant sources and data, this guide offers only an overview of available information. Agriculture is as ancient as human civilization itself and is the fundamental activity through which humans survive on earth. Especially in developing countries, agriculture is the primary contributor to the nation's economy. Agricultural practices, however, may contribute to global climate change: Arable farming, burning and clearing of forests, wetland rice cultivation, raising of livestock, and use of nitrogenous fertilizer can lead to increased concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. Conversely, global climate change could affect agriculture by reducing the amount of land available for cultivation, decreasing crop yields, and threatening food security, especially in the developing countries. Therefore, systematically documenting and disseminating information related to the impact of agricultural activities on the global climateand vice versaare important tasks. Identifying appropriate technological and policy interventions to mitigate global climate change is crucial at the national, regional, and local levels. Considering indigenous environmental knowledge, including human adaptive strategies, is necessary to strengthen technological and policy initiatives.
