Please visit her group's web pages. The Radar Meteorology group works with two radars, one of which is mobile. These radars are used to study wind and the different precipitation types in complex orography such as thunderstorms but also weak convective and stratiform rain. The microstructure of solid and liquid precipitation is studied in detail with several different in-situ instruments which are partly developed by the group themselves. An important part of the activities of the group are field experiments. The Group for Experimental Mesoscale Dynamics is headed by Prof. Hans Richner. It investigates primarily wind fields in complex terrain, e.g., in the Alps. Local wind systems (e.g. mountain-valley wind systems) as well as synoptically driven flow (e.g. foehn) are primary targets for observations and analyses. Investigations into smaller scale flow fields are carried out, in particular in view of transport and dispersion of air pollution.

The concentrations of anthropogenic aerosols such as sulphate (SO ) and carbonaceous aerosols (black carbon, BC and organic carbon, OC) have substantially increased the global mean burden of aerosols from pre-industrial times to the present day. Some aerosol particles reflect solar radiation (direct effect) and thus can partly offset the warming caused by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Aerosol particles also change the microphysical properties of clouds resulting in more but smaller cloud droplets that scatter more sunlight back to space (indirect cloud albedo effect) and reduce the precipitation efficiency of warm clouds (indirect cloud lifetime effect, see Figure). This has also implication for the hydrological cycle. One of the largest uncertainties for climate change predictions of the radiation balance and the hydrological cycle is the interaction between aerosols and clouds. A research project in atmospheric physics does not mean that you will only be qualified to conduct research in that particular area. It simply means that you will be investigating physical principles particularly relevant to the study of the atmosphere. A program in Atmospheric Physics is distinct from one in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science, although there is some overlap. For example, as a student in Michigan Tech's program you would earn a Ph.D. in Physics, having taken courses typical for that degree, such as Electricity and Magnetism, Statistical Mechanics, and Mathematical Physics. You also would take some courses similar to those commonly offered in a program in atmospheric science, such as Fluid Mechanics and Atmospheric Thermodynamics. In short, you would be a physicist with a focus on research problems related to the atmosphere. Many eminent physicists have made significant contributions to atmospheric physics, while many people who have called themselves atmsopheric scientists have made significant contributions to basic physics. As noted above, Lord Rayleigh was the first to answer the question of why the sky is blue. Irving Langmuir contributed to the discipline of cloud physics. Neville Fletcher, who wrote a classic text in cloud physics, has published fundamental papers in nucleation and surface physics. Sean Twomey, another atmospheric physicist, is the author of a classic text on the mathematics of inversion problems.

This program includes both survey courses at the 600 level and specialty courses, stressing atmospheric radiation and remote sensing at the 700 level. These courses cover a wide range of topics in atmospheric physics, global climate change, observational techniques, and satellite data analysis. An extremely wide range of thesis topics is available to the student via both the tenure-track faculty and the JCET faculty. Facilities and data-sets at NASA/Goddard will be readily available to students depending on their research interests. Degree Requirements: Master of Science: The M.S. degree is a terminal degree designed to prepare the graduate for immediate entry into the workforce as a practicing professional. The degree program is designed to offer students maximum flexibility, with most of the course requirements being electives. The minimum requirement for the M.S. degree is a total of 30 credit hours of which 18 credit hours must be taken at the 600 level or higher. Students are encouraged to choose the thesis option, although a non-thesis option is available. All students must complete the core curriculum which consists of PHYS 605 (Mathematical Physics) and either PHYS 601 (Quantum Mechanics I) or PHYS 424 (Introduction to Quantum Mechanics) taken for graduate credit, and 3 specialty courses in atmospheric physics including PHYS 621 and PHYS 622. All of these required courses must be passed with a minimum grade of B. All students are also required to take PHYS 698 (Physics Seminar) for each of the first three semesters.

Seven of the faculty are active in atmospheric physics research, joined in this research by undergraduate and graduate students , by adjunct and emeritus faculty, by post-docs and by colleagues at other institutions.
