Relix Magazine: Issue 17-05 September/October - 1990 INDEPENDENTS DAZE by Mick Skidmore M ICKEY Hart, AtThe Edge (Rykodisc). Hart has always taken the world of percussionbased music to its edge, and this latest release, which is a companion piece to his and Jay Stevens's book Drumming At The Edge Of Magic is his most masterful effort to date. It finds him in his most exploratory and imaginative mood ever. The result is some really enthralling percussion music that draws on both ancient and modern ideas, and even though it's complex in nature this is extremely accessible stuff. The sound is simply breathtaking (even on an advance cassette), from the atmospheric opener "#4 For Gaia," which segues nicely into the lilting "Sky Water," through the rich, textured rhythms of "Lonesome Hero" and "Fast Sailing" to the the riveting sounds of "The Eliminators" and the tablaled "Brainstorm." The album closes on a truly eclectic note with "Pigs In Space," with Airto on vocals. Helping Hart out with this project are Zakir Hussain, Airto Moreira, Babatunde Olatunji, and Jerry Garcia, among others. A true percussion masterpiece. The 'Mystery' of Raymond Scott
...and even a little about Carl Stalling Original position in magazine: pages 3-6 Contents: Laughing Violins Hot jazz and swing An extravagant way to compose Skip the eyes ... Discography Smart cookies who went to the Meltdown Festival at the South Bank some two summers ago will have heard the music of Raymond Scott as played by The Wooden Indians, a sextet of Netherlandish musicians from the Dutch Broadcasting Orchestra. This writer missed the show and had to have the 'mystery' of Scott explained to him. It's still an intriguing tale. Remember the facts that don't quite add up... Raymond Scott did not exist; he was a composer who never put pen to paper; The Raymond Scott Quintette never had five players; and his music is better known today through Carl Stalling's cartoon scores than his own records. Let's investigate...
Laughing Violins
The way in for most people is through the classic Warner Brothers cartoons. If you ever payed attention to the music for these cartoons, chances are you will have heard a Raymond Scott composition.

"Parts of the movie were filmed on the QE2 Luxury Liner, the Staten Island Ferry, the streets of Manhattan, the United Nations Building, and of course, at the Statue of Liberty herself. Part of this movie was also shown on the TV quiz show, 'To Tell The Truth' starring Gary Moore, where Kerry McDonald and 2 imposters appeared as guests and talked about the making of the movie. The movie premiered in May of 1967 for a two-day run, to packed houses, at DAHS."
