Violinist Gil Shaham Plays Brahms Violin Concerto with James Levine Conducting
    by
    Lyn Bronson
Yesterday afternoon’s concert at Carnegie Hall featured two superstars, the soloist in the Brahms Violin Concerto, Gil Shaham, and also the Music Director and Conductor of the Met Orchestra, James Levine, or “Jimmy” as he is affectionately known to his friendsand loyal fans. Perhaps there was even a third superstar, the Met Orchestra itself. As a Californian I was wondering how many music fans outside of California can even name the conductor of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. In any case, its orchestra does not have its own world-class subscription series appearing throughout the season in a prestigious venue like Carnegie Hall. We Californians have been hearing a lot a buzz during the past twenty years about James (er, I mean “Jimmy”) Levine, and yesterday I was seeing and hearing for myself just how imposing a presence he can be. He was dynamite in the Amériques by Edgar Varese, for he left no stone unturned in encouraging every instrument of the orchestra, and also a whole bunch of non orchestral instruments, to go over the top and produce a crazy quilt of agonized, frenzied sounds. From the accumulation of fortissimo dynamics, I almost expected to see specks of plaster flaking down from Carnegie Hall’s domed ceiling. By any standard it was an impressive performance by a very fine orchestra. Did he make me like the piece? Well, no he didn’t, despite the brilliant performance.

Jonathan Swartz Makes Music a Family Affair It was common to hear piano melodies and violin rhythms floating from the Swartz household on 67 Lynwood Ave. in Toronto, Canada, nearly 20 years ago - a place where family and music went hand-in-hand, and still does today. ASU's Assistant Professor of Music and String Area Coordinator Jonathan Swartz has continued to embrace the family-music tradition instilled by his mother, a piano teacher, and two older sisters who religiously practiced violin and harp growing up. At age three, Swartz's pleas to play violin were met with opposition, until his parents finally acquiesced, deciding that he was old enough to play violin before the age of four. Since then, Swartz hasn't stopped - taking time along the way to perform recitals with his wife, concert pianist Wendy Chen, and with his sister, Jennifer Swartz, principal harpist for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Swartz has taken the concept of family one level further, working diligently since 2001 to bolster the career of a hometown friend he knew as a teenager and with whom he reconnected while attending Rice University. He initially commissioned friend Kieren MacMillan, a Canadian composer, to write an unaccompanied violin piece for him, which was so successful that Swartz commissioned a second work. The project has blossomed into two additional pieces, with plans underway to complete a CD devoted entirely to MacMillan's compositions.
