Apparently, their parents discouraged them from doing so, since Orli, as she explains to Fred Child, was "just ready to come out of the sandbox" when Gil was already having a big career. So, instead of tagging along with her big brother, Orli has become a renowned and respected concert pianist in her own right. Shaham in London (I): Barber, Elgar, Brahms; Gil Shaham (violin), Philharmonia Orchestra; David Zinman (conductor); RFH, 4 th March 2004 (AR)
This Philharmonia ‘safe’ programme of concert classics opened with a pristine performance of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings – his most popular and often-performed work. Delivered with a profundity which lent the work even more dignity and pathos than usual, the Philharmonia strings wisely avoided the pitfall of saccharine sound, and David Zinman conducted the elegiac score with reserve and refinement. The internationally acclaimed violinist Gil Shaham gave an extraordinarily sensitive and subtle interpretation of Sir Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B minor , Op. 61. His purity of tone and poetic phrasing were reminiscent of the celebrated recording made by the 16 year old Menuhin under the direction of the composer. In the Allegro , Shaham’s assured playing allowed the music to glow and flow with seemingly effortless ease: the notes were crisply delivered, devoid of slurring. Zinman was a perfect, intuitive partner for his soloist and produced expressive, dramatic playing from his forces, particularly from the visceral brass. There was a wonderful vulnerability, almost shyness in his playing of the

Print this article Imagine the pressure of being a world-renowned soloist, on stage, in a packed, sold-out orchestra hall, and having your instrument break. Actually, for most of us, this wouldn’t be difficult to imagine at all. We are sole suppliers of highly technical products sold in high volumes. Every day, we either perform or. . .well, we PERFORM! I recently watched one of the classical music world’s most sought-after and highly acclaimed violinists, Gil Shaham, at Cleveland’s Severance Hall. He was performing a highly technical, 12-tone concerto with the touring San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Shaham wasn’t just playing any violin. He was playing the 1699 “Countess Polignac” Stradivarius violin. About halfway through the second movement, the impossible happened—a string broke on the violinist’s instrument! How the soloist, the conductor and the orchestra responded reminded me of the position many of us are in as sole suppliers to major manufacturers in these days of “lean” and “just-in-time” inventory. You can’t get much leaner than one instrument per performer, and you certainly can't get more “just-in-time” than a live performance.
