MAYUMI SEILER
Mayumi Seiler began her musical upbringing in Osaka, Japan, where she was born of Japanese/German parentage. She began playing the violin at the age of three. At the age of six, her family moved to Salzburg, Austria, where she continued her studies. While attending the Salzburg Mozarteum, Ms. Seiler was prominently influenced by her association with the late Sandor Vegh. At a very young age, she was performing with her three sisters in the Seiler String Quartet throughout Japan and Europe. She then moved to London, England, where she forged an international solo career. Strad Magazine said of her, " Mayumi Seiler unites the technical excellence of the Orient with the grand chamber music tradition of Germany." Ms. Seiler has appeared as soloist with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields at the Proms in London, and has also appeared with the Royal Philharmonic, Moscow Symphony, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Academica Salzburg, Bournemouth Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Berlin Symphony and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, among others. With the support of a private benefactor, Mayumi Seiler plays a circa 1740 J.B. Guadagnini violin. As a chamber musician, she has been a guest leader with several groups, including the Nash Ensemble, and has made numerous recordings as the leader of the Schubert Ensemble of London. She travels throughout Europe, the Far East, Canada and the US, where she has performed frequently in the Smithsonian Chamber Music series as a member of the Smithsonian’s Axelrod String Quartet. Ms. Seiler also teaches at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and Glenn Gould Professional School.

ooking back over the 1999-2000 music season, the things that meet the eye first, are discordant the traumatic TSO strike; the seemingly endless machinations that threaten to undermine yet again the long overdue Toronto opera house; the very sad demise of the Ford Centre music series; and the close call, just weeks ago, for the Downtown Jazz Festival. To this litany, one could add a 40% reduction in Ontario Arts Council funding over the past four years; continuing budget woes at the CBC; and what looks like the planned systematic destruction of music education in our public schools. But the pages of WholeNote offer another view of the season: the many, many small details that together are evidence of the healthy abundance in our musical scene. T he choral scene is flourishing, with new choirs, like VocalPoint and The Riverdale Children’s Chorus being created, and older ones (too numerous to mention all by name) attracting new members and presenting innovative repertoire to (usually) large audiences. A sign of this strength: one of our choirs, the Exultate Chamber Singers, not only won in its category in the CBC Choral Competition, but also won the top prize as the most outstanding choir.
