NORTH AMERICAN ENSEMBLE
Cynthia Steljes, Peter De Sotto, Joseph Macerollo, and George Meanwell of Quartetto Gelato MMMMMM -GELATO
Now, how many chamber ensembles can say their CDs have gone to outer space? Well, Quartetto Gelato can. Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk brought one of their discs along on a space shuttle Columbia flight. This group of multi-
talented performers blend oboe, English horn, violin, accordion, cello, guitar, mandolin, and voice into a sound that has received much acclaim from coast to coast to coast. Quartetto Gelato is all over the universe in more ways than one: their repertoire includes Classical works, opera arias, tango, showpieces, and gypsy fiddling. They have toured North America, Sweden, and Southeast Asia, and last season the group made its Italian debut in Milan. In July, Quartetto Gelato can be heard in Cincinnati (Jul 3), at the Galway Festival (Jul 13), and in Ottawa (Jul 25). A few of their concerts during the upcoming season include Portland, OR (Sep 26); Clinton, NY (Oct 28); Pomona, NJ (Oct 31); Kansas City, MO (Dec 11); and Morrow, GA (Dec 18).

About U of O Prospective Students Students Services ... Gazette Archives Printable Version January 11, 2002 Celebrating women and song Marlene Orton Musicians from across the country will converge on the University of Ottawa later this month to celebrate the works of women whose names have sometimes been overshadowed by their better-known male counterparts. The festival features a series of lectures and eight concerts with music culled from nearly 800 years of work by women. They range from the sacred chants and musical plays of the 12th century abbess Hildegard von Bingen to the so-called second Canadian national anthem – the Hockey Night in Canada Theme, composed by Vancouver native Dolores Claman in 1968. The festival is a collaboration of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society, the University of Ottawa and the Association of Canadian Women Composers, which was formed in 1980 and has grown to become a national network. Seven new works by Canadian women will premiere during the festival. “We’ve never had, in our entire history as an organization, even one concert exclusively devoted to music by women,” says Julian Armour, artistic director of the chamber music society. “We play lots of music by women. But if you go through the history of music, you will see composer after composer who is instantly recognized, and they are for the most part men.” Amour is often asked why women don’t write more music. “Women,” he says, “have written a lot of music, but in every country and in every period in history, there have been women with phenomenal talents who were discouraged from writing music.”

Ex may get soccer stadium after all Go to Story
With less than a month to go before the Canadian Soccer Association announces what is hopefully a final location for its 20,000-seat soccer stadium, speculation on that location has come full circle, back to a site first proposed more than two years ago. But the body governing soccer in Canada is keeping mum about a proposal to place the stadium — which will play host to the FIFA 2007 world youth championship — back on the grounds of Toronto's Exhibition Place. After all, the CSA has been burned before on this deal. "There's been a considerable amount of interest in the (Exhibition Place) site ... but we've had two false starts on this thing already, so we really don't want to say anything now," said Kevan Pipe, chief operating officer of the CSA, referring to the original plans to pair the stadium with a new home for the Argos, first on the Varsity site at the University of Toronto and then later on the campus of York University.
