The most acclaimed violinist of his generation, Itzhak Perlman has achieved a level of respect and admiration throughout the world that bears witness to his humanity and his charm, as well as his formidable artistry. His irrepressible joy in making music has been one of the hallmarks of his career, and it was cited by U.S. President Ronald Reagan when he bestowed on Perlman the nation's Medal of Liberty in 1986. Perlman is also one of the most prolific and versatile recording artists of his time. For Sony Classical he recently reunited with Academy Award-winning composer and conductor John Williams for the recording Cinema Serenade with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, featuring new arrangements for violin and orchestra of popular contemporary film music. Included in the recording was an excerpt from Williams' Academy Award-winning score for Schindler's List, for which Perlman had been soloist on the film's soundtrack. The violinist has called his participation in the film one of his proudest achievements. Yo-Yo Ma , Frederica von Stade, Rudolf Firkusny and the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa Born in Israel in 1945, Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. He came to New York and was soon propelled into the international arena with an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Following studies at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay, Perlman won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964, and his burgeoning career was underway.

Itzhak Perlman Explores His Klezmer Soul Concert review: Itzhak Perlman and four klezmer bands at Tanglewood by Shel Horowitz Tanglewoodthe Berkshire summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestrawas never like this before! Normally the province of tuxedo-clad classical musicians playing orchestral favorites, this night saw classically trained performers wearing casual clothingeven some tie-dyed t-shirts ... an array of drums and amplifiers on stage ... audience members clapping out the complex rhythms ... and lots of dancing in the aisles of the Shed. The featured performer was violinist Itzhak Perlmanno stranger to Tanglewood and other great classical stagesbut the music was not classical, but klezmer. Klezmer, the folk music of Eastern European Jews, is a lively and varied music. Like so much of Jewish culture, klezmer lives and breathes and changesconstantly drawing from its surroundings. From minor-key dirges influenced by Jewish liturgy and Arab folk traditions, to hard-driving dance music backed by roaring clarinets and trumpets, to lightning-fast Hungarian Gypsy fiddle tunes, klezmer has absorbed the traditions around it in every country where the Jews of Eastern Europe settledincluding the United Sates, where klezmer has sometimes been called "Jewish jazz." Note to Yiddish speakers: I did the best I could with the spellings. Please forgive any errors. It was in the U.S. that klezmer was rediscovered in the 1960s and '70s, the spirit of the old wandering musicians breathing new life into the music as ensembles of young musicians began to explore an almost-lost tradition.

Itzhak Perlman with Students and Alumni of the Perlman Music Program
In the early days of commercial network television Sunday evenings were the province of the CBS variety show “Toast of the Town,” later renamed “The Ed Sullivan Show” in tribute to its dour host. On Sunday, February 15, 1959 Sullivan devoted an entire program to performers from Israel, among whom was a 13-year old violinist. A victim of polio at the age of 4, he came on stage with the aid of crutches and offered a sterling performance of the final movement from Mendelssohn’s E Minor Violin Concerto. His name was Itzhak Perlman. Fast forward: Perlman remained in New York and was accepted as a scholarship student at the Juilliard School, studying there with two legendary violin pedagogues, Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay. In 1964, just five years after his “Ed Sullivan” appearance, Itzhak Perlman won the internationally prestigious Leventritt Competition in New York. There was good news for him that evening: he had won, and bad news: his violin, which was on loan to him, had been stolen backstage at Carnegie Hall. A few days later the violin was discovered in a pawnshop and there was a happy ending to the entire affair. Needless to say, Perlman’s subsequent career has been one of the great ones in the performing history of music. Study and hard work have been defining characteristics of Itzhak Perlman’s life. And remembering the support and mentoring he received from Isaac Stern and others, Perlman has been a tireless supporter of and mentor to young, aspiring violinists of the new generation, primarily at Brooklyn College and most recently at the Juilliard School. A few years ago Perlman and his violinist-trained wife, Toby, decided to found a more organized approach. Thus came into being The Perlman Music Program whose mission statement “welcomes young musicians of rare and special talent into a richly supportive musical community.”
